Is Trump so stupid or reckless that he interprets this as an endorsement? Obviously he is counting on the lack of discernment among his supporters to be able to tell the difference. Will Redford reply?

Trump is like the guy you turn down for a date because you find him so repulsive that you could never imagine even kissing him, BUT, because you’re a nice girl, you do it kindly so as not to be mean or cruel. And the guy is so delusional he hears something completely different and thinks, “hey, I’m IN there. She WANTS ME.”

I don’t think this is an example of Trump twisting Redford’s words. It’s likely the only part he heard, while the rest was background noise. Guys like him invent their own reality.

But when she was growing up, I always advised her , when not interested in a fellow, to not twist the knife.
What you describe has happened in her case, and on an obviously much smaller and different scale.
In the case of Trump, he has actually made a cottage industry of something most men quail at experiencing.

Exactly. So imagine what Trump will do with actual praise he’s received from Krugman and Warren. If Donald can turn Redford’s slam into a compliment – and with his supporters, it’s not that hard – think of how simple it will be to do the same with the actual complimentary words of Warren and Krugman. Sure, they both balanced their praise with condemnation of Trump on the whole, but he’s never going to show that part.
