Well, and for that reason too…I’m hardly a violent person - I’m a dovish librul - but Cruz’s smirk just engenders this instant, visceral reaction and desire to punch. I am thrown off by it.

50% correct appraisal of the obvious fact that Cruz is the most plausible opponent in this field, 50% genuine rage that anyone–people running against him included–dare offer anything other than fulsome, toadying praise of Donald Trump.

All of the ‘Trump Goes After Cruz’ or ‘Trump Slams Ted Cruz’ headlines are misleading. These milquetoast tweets from Trump are slight of hand to distract from the fact that the only difference between Trump and Cruz is a law degree.

I disagree. Cruz is a far easier win than Trump. There are at least two things Trump has going for him that Cruz doesn’t.

  1. Many people are still operating under the assumption that Trump is self-made, that he earned his money through hard work and business savvy. This is a myth Trump has been building for some 30+ years, and it’s one that will be tough to dislodge from people’s minds. It’s why so many people believe he will be a great president for the economy. There are no such myths surrounding Cruz.

  2. Trump has some charisma, even if he’s boorish and detestable. Many of the celebrities and pols who’ve been reluctant to challenge him have talked about what a nice, friendly person he is behind closed doors. I’ve only heard the opposite about Cruz, who has none of the charisma or celebrity of Trump.

Cruz is viscerally loathsome. He’s often described as the most hated person in the Senate, and that’s just the Republicans. He’d probably force some senators in safe seats to retire or risk losing embarrassingly (McCain, Grassley). He would be an even worse disaster for the GOP than Trump.

I actually think Trump would be easier to beat and less dangerous than Cruz as president (can’t believe I’m saying but it’s all relative).

After watching the Mussolini clips that Josh Marshall posted the other day (uncannily Trumpish), I’ve gotta agree with you that his boorishness is the kind of thing that passes as charisma for the many scared and bigoted idiots among us.
