Discussion: DOJ Officials Reportedly Warned Comey That Announcement Broke With Policy

It seems that there are no honest conservatives anywhere in the federal government. They are all corrupted by partisanship. I used to respect Comey, I’m done with him.

Republicans fuck up everything they do because they put party first, country second. It’s as simple as that.

I don’t doubt that conservatives see Hillary as an existential threat to the country. Overblown, yes. But in that light…

What legal obligation did he have to inform Congress when they weren’t even in session? Furthermore, was the “obligation” legal or was it personal, as in he made a promise to inform them of any new developments even though there may be no law that says he has to do so?

IMHO the GOP and right-wing noise machine have made it impossible to be both a so-called conservative and an honest person. Conservatism as a valid, plausible stance in political philosophy is a thing of the past. An incoherent jumble of plutocracy, theocracy, populism, xenophobia, cultural resentment, white nationalism and nihilism have replaced it. No honest person can defend it.

Hey a$$hole, where’s your memo about Roger Stone’s ties to Wikileaks? Where’s the f#cking memo regarding the Trump campaign’s ties to Putin?

Oh, you don’t want to comment on those cases? Resign, you disgusting sack of sh!t.

And he broke with that policy because…?
I don’t think any explanation he might offer ( or has proffered) will reflect very well upon him.
Except perhaps to a right-wing sinecure hence he may go.

You’re right, but there has never been a truly honest argument for conservatism, in my view. It has always been, to paraphrase Galbraith very loosely just the latest chapter in humanity’s ongoing attempt to justify our greed.

Q.E.D.
(Hope I used that correctly but you know what I mean.)

So it begins, the call for Comey to resign. This from Lanny Davis, “special counsel to former President Clinton from 1996 to 1998 and is a regular columnist for The Hill newspaper. He has been a friend of Hillary Clinton since they were students at Yale Law School together in 1969 and 1970.”

The Comey lovers (yes, I’m talking to you, Josh Marshall) need to see the man for what he is. First his unethical July hit job and now this. Wake up.

Now it turns out emails from or to Huma may have been previously reviewed by the FBI long before Comey’s July announcement because these were on Hillary’s server. So how is this even a “new development”?

(Edit) Good news is this will probably have insignificant effect on election cake, which is baked. Listening to Trump rally in CO, Trump spewing lie after lie and the crowd eating them up. I am beginning to think the only ones voting for Trump are those who go to his rallies. They are truly an alternate universe of stupid.

It was personal. This is all about him not wanting Chaffitz to be able to claim he misled them by making a statement that was true at the time stated but later became untrue. This is all about him feeling bruised because he was accused of having acted politically and his efforts to prove that he didn’t act politically only opened him up to further charges that he acted politically.

That’s the more benign explanation, anyway, even though it demonstrates that he’s putting his own reputation over duty or the best interest of the agency he heads. The non-benign explanation is that he’s deliberately trying to suppress turnout for Hillary, but I have a hard time anyone would be wiling to act like such a blundering, blithering idiot to do that when he could have accomplished it with a discreet leak to the Post or the Times.

“He is operating independently of the Justice Department,” the official told the Post. “And he knows it.”

“evidence that he acknowledges may not be significant,” [former assistant U.S. attorney] Akerman added. “The job of the FBI is simply to investigate and to provide the results of its investigation to the prosecutorial arm of the U.S. Department of Justice. His job is not to give a running commentary about any investigation or his opinion about any investigation. This is particularly egregious since Secretary Clinton has no way to respond to what amounts to nebulous and speculative innuendo”

Sums this up perfectly!

Bottom line: yet another Rethuglican attempt to ratfuck the election.

I just don’t see this having much of an effect on the election. Most people have already decided who they are going to vote for and more email bullshit is not going to move the needle. The polls were already beginning to tighten up somewhat. There may be a small group of undecideds out there that this may push over the wall to Trump but they were probably headed his way anyhow. Comey was wrong to do this and should be punished but if this pushes the election to Trump then you would have to wonder did Hillary ever have a chance to begin with.
