Excuse me, am I having a brain malfunction?
Why is the DOJ defending the President?
We’re paying their salaries, as well as Trump’s. Who is defending us?

Er … isn’t the entire concept of precedent based on “what about”?
Ahhh…the ‘They’re only doing it to give money to his kids and curry favor with the President and not to give the president money, even though the president still owns the business and can access the funds any time he wants’ ploy.
I was wondering when they would pull that old chestnut.
don’t forget the kiddies.
no child-labor laws then, either.
thank you!!!
see my comment below
for reference ……
Actually, US presidents are expected (required?) to give up any gifts given to them by foreign leaders, to the National Archives.
Although, Trump apparently gave Vlad’s soccer ball gift to Barron.
If Trump properties were so beloved by people other than potentates then why are residents requesting and having removed any sign associated with them?
It’s the mint they put on your pillow that seals the deal.
I stopped reading this once it was clear the argument was "If it were different it might be less bad, but it would still be pretty bad, which makes the current situation less bad too, because if it were different it would still be bad, so there’s no need to make it less bad, because even less bad is still bad, … " etc. etc. ad infinitum. I ask you.
“…customers who wish to ‘curry favor with the President might continue to do so by supporting his family’s business and brand even if he lacked a personal financial interest.’”
The fact that he does have a personal financial interest is just gravy for him, they then added.
I’m almost afraid to ask what evidence the Rumplovers have that any foreign government ever purchased a single Predident Obama title. Whataboutism seems like the lesser of the arguments failures, the greater failure being its just some shit they made up.
Beautiful picture of the Obamas…what a stunning dress. And I love Jimmy Carter…Bill conflicts me…
But still…nice warm moment here! Thanks!
Because a block of $1,000+ dollar a night suites is JUST the same as a book.
This is the big thing though…I think it goes beyond worrying about emoluments transgressions…it’s the DISCOVERY that freaks out donnie.
“The point is that none of this intrusive discovery should be allowed in this improper official-capacity suit against a sitting President,” DOJ attorneys representing Trump in his capacity as president wrote in the brief.
It’s the U.S. Mint, though
Oh, in some European capitals, streets are paved in the Audacity of Hope.
I’d actually agree with the idea of Obama’s books IF someone could show me an instance in which a foreign government bought 10,000 copies of his books, you know, in the same way that a lobbyist for the Saudi government rented 500 rooms in the Trump International Hotel in Washington last December.
Exactly. And people in the judicial branch (judges and staff attorneys) are smart enough to see through it.
It’s possible, Trump attorneys write, that customers who wish to “curry favor with the President might continue to do so by supporting his family’s business and brand even if he lacked a personal financial interest.”
The special irony here is that this is a deranged version of the defense against attacks on the Clinton Foundation. In that case, the argument was that they might be giving money to it because they thought it would curry favor with Hillary, but it didn’t influence her because she didn’t personally benefit. Here they seem to be almost arguing the reverse - that it would influence him even if he didn’t have a personal stake, so why not just let him have the money? Which is almost certainly true since as a for-profit business, his sons would still make money off it, but also just for ego because his name is on it.
