Alternately - and this is a crazy idea, I know - they might have chosen to go with that depiction of him because that’s how it happened. I know, it’s not nearly as interesting as deconstructing a stereotype, but Dre and Cube are still pretty genuine, no bullshit people. It’s entirely possible they wanted the story that got told to be, you know… true.

I don’t get it. If I have the means to help someone out, it’s not because I’m trying to be a savior to them, I’m just following the human instinct to be compassionate. Doesn’t matter to me what their race or culture is. If I donate to an organization like Make A Wish or American Heart Association, I don’t enclose a note that says “For blacks only because they need it more.” Honestly, it never occurred to me that someone might resent me trying to help her or him because I’m white.
I wonder if the producers of this biopic simply aren’t able to see the forest for the trees.
I think the “White Savior” angle is complicated all the way around. There is nothing to save without the a priori sacrifice or creativity of the minority group. But, given the social, political and economic dominance of the Whites during the last 300+ years here, there would have to be a “savior” to break down certain barriers. It is what it is.
No one made Jackie Robinson a great player except Jackie but if we want integration, we need a White dude to get him in the majors so he can break down the barrier and make serious money, for example.
