Discussion: ‘Distractingly Sexy’ Female Scientists Fire Back At Nobel Prize Winner

He’s right…about one thing: Geeky science females are hot! In my mind, there’s nothing sexier than a well-educated woman with a powerful intellect. Tim Hunt, on the other hand, should probably segregate himself voluntarily. His attitude is definitely not going to attract the more cerebral babes out there. And, his brother Mike is always getting paged at bars, but never answers…
Oh, and I thought this was awesome:

You’ve really screwed up when you have to resign from an honorary position.

The 72-year-old Hunt resigned Thursday from his position as an honorary professor at University College London, according to The New York Times.

For the record, did anyone cry?

Where’s the ‘distractingly sexy’ part?

All I see is some women in science-burqas. What am I supposed to be distracted by…their sexually suggestive snorkels, or their smokin’ hot safety goggles?

If he said something to the effect that office romances can be disruptive or destructive in many cases I think that would be a valid statement. I’ve seen lives and careers destroyed over office affairs. (I’ve also seen several marriages.)
To say more than that is getting out on a limb.

To fight bigotry with bigotry: scientists are not known for their emotional maturity.

Ilke Lorene Lynns post. Something about a woman in a hole that turns me on…lolo This is hilarious! Have we heard from Mr. Hunt yet?

Oh for the days when blacks and women knew their place, amirite?

The noble Nobel professor should investigate “the level playing field of the mind”.

Sharia law would solve that problem nicely. So would a little self-control and/or maturity.

I’m glad Dr Hunt never visited my lab. He wouldn’t have lasted a day.

So, you are saying all scientists are lacking in maturity because of one man’s idiocy?
I would disagree. I have known many many men and women who made their livings as scientists and they raised families in stable loving environments. And they had long term stable relationships with their significant other (married and unmarried). But then I have known one individual, a brilliant man…well known in his field who was lacking in personal honor and integrity. But he was an aberration considering the dozens of others of my acquaintance who were well adjusted people.

I’m not tempted at all to join twitter.

Yeah, easy to say. I’ve never had any ofc romance, but have seen both men and women go down in flames over them.
And I’ve seen several marriages, too.

Dr Hunt himself in a BBC article said "“I have fallen in love with people in the lab and people in the lab have fallen in love with me and it’s very disruptive to the science because it’s terribly important that in a lab people are on a level playing field.”

That such behavior is disruptive is accurate. That there should be a level playing field is also important. BUT that he had so little self control that he let his emotions get the best of him shows a lack of self awareness and maturity. From the wording of his statement he apparently let this happen more than once which shows real idiocy. He should have resigned long ago.

I said bigotry, but thanks for underlining. In case your “you are saying…?” was not rhetorical, then: no I’m not saying that. I’m saying that that is a stereotype in our society.

Does he also worry about ‘teh ghey’ in the lab because they might fall in love with him? What a fuckin’ pompous maroon.
