Discussion: Dick's Sporting Goods No Longer Selling Assault Rifles, Guns To Anyone Under 21

In a corporatocracy, this is how you know you’re winning.

“Hysterical hyperventilating outrage”

AKA

“paradoxically aggressive snowflakery”

(h/t Josh M)

The wording here is a bit unclear, but I think you’re misunderstanding. They will no longer sell assault weapons at all, and they won’t sell any gun to anyone under 21, period. They are also no longer selling high capacity magazines (see the NYT article). Let’s give credit where it’s due.

Dick’s has displayed a willingness to look at the issue and make commonsense changes.

They’re not ‘banning all guns’ or anything radical. They’re just saying ‘we’re not carrying this class of firearms and you have to reach full majority before purchasing’.

Smart and responsible.

It is a step in the right direction, a beginning but not nearly the end of the journey.
The lawmakers have to get involved and way beyond thoughts and prayers after the fact(s).
Gun attacks are stopped before they begin, not once the slaughter is underway. That’s called a shootout, a gun battle, which isn’t prevention but is merely the end result of having an armed populace hellbent on getting their inner Rambo on.

Obviously the current crop of Republicans aren’t going to get the job done, so as effort is expended to get legislation enacted it needs to coincide with getting new legislators. IOW, the blue wave solves many things including this gun epidemic that is as lethal as any infection.

Its a twofer people, vote blue and cut to the chase.

That’s actually one of the less powerful ones. They have some that can just suck the cars down like paper into a paper shredder and reduce them to bits of less than a square inch.

I can’t believe there wasn’t more money to be made from of parting that car out rather than shredding it, though. Old VW drivers are one of those cultish groups of car enthusiasts who will do anything to keep their crappy old machines on the road.

At the risk of sounding idealistic: “Be a Dick. Don’t sell guns.”

Wait a minute! They did this after Sandy Hook, too. https://www.rawstory.com/2018/02/dicks-sporting-goods-stopped-selling-assault-weapons-started-selling-less-year-later/

Sure, this is probably a great PR move for them. It was a good PR move after Sandy Hook, too. But why is TPM giving them so much credit for a PR move?

At the very least, you should mention their history of doing this sort of thing. It’s not exactly ancient history, is it?

Or in the driveway acting as a supplemental storage shed for the last couple of decades, lol. My neighbor. Actually I don’t mind, it’s Austin.

Someday, they’ll get that ol’ Bug back on the road! They just need to find the time, but just you wait.

We chased some young dudes off who tried to tow it away when he was incapacitated for an extended period - some nephew of a friend of a friend who’d bought it, right. But you’re right, I’ve heard talk about that mythical future road trip, lol. It just needs a rebuilt engine and new suspension and new floorboards and maybe some upholstery on the driver’s seat and who knows about the speedometer. The mirrors are intact as far as I can tell. And the neighborhood cats seem to like to get under it when it’s rainy.

I’m hardly one to talk. I finally sold the 2002 for basically nothing to some guy who wanted to work on it with his kid.
