Discussion: Despite Diplomatic Breakthrough, US Embargo On Cuba Will Remain

I wonder, does he demand that we use that standard with say… Saudi Arabia or China?

Cubans are not like other Latinos. Historically, Cubans have been a strongly Republican voting bloc because of the perception that Republicans are harder on the Castro regime. This trend has softened some in recent years as generations of Cubans who don’t remember Castro have reached voting age, but this remains a very Republican group.

Just wondering how the Congress would enforce the embargo if the Executive were, shall we say, a bit dilatory in taking enforcement action. “Yes, the Justice Department is engaging in a thorough-going review of the actions of companies X, Y, and Z.” Wink-wink, nudge-nudge.

Well Menendez is nominally a Democrat. But lunatic cold-war troglodyte thinking can sometimes be a bipartisan affair.

And what terrorism has Cuba been sponsoring lately? (And let’s not forget that the US sponsored the Contra terrorists during the Reagan years.)

During the war against the Sandinista government, the contras carried out many human rights violations, and evidence suggests that these were systematically committed as an element of warfare strategy. (Wikipedia)

I certainly hope so. It is long, long, long past time for the US to end this senseless and cruel embargo.

I don’t doubt it – the Cuban people have been longing for normalized relations with the US for many years now.

Cuba is now on my bucket list of places I want to go before I die.

When will Republicans end their War on Capitalism and the Catholic Church?

Yes, am aware of that. But what this POTUS action does–in addition to manifesting a more up-to-date, mature, sophisticated, economically defensible, and ethically humanitarian foreign policy toward Cuba–is to further drive a wedge between the very conservative expat (aging) Cubans who were Rubio’s core base, and the other ranges of Latino-identifying political demographics, further marginalizing both antiquated expat attitudes, and Rubio himself.

C’mon, Captain, give Marco a break! The poor man know this is the end of his political career and that Florida will likely be lost to the GOP for at least a generation to come. Let him have his temper tantrum. It’s all he’s got left.

SCREW CONGRESS! Obama needs to play full-contact smash-mouth ‘chess’ - in the very very near future, Obama & a diplomatic delegation (including some willing GOPers) AND the Pope should do a high profile visit to Cuba - tearing down the figurative walls that have been placed between the population of the two countries - set up various exchanges - medical school, meteorological, air traffic control cooperation , cultural exchange and on and on. Treat this thing like it was a giant election campaign - win the hearts and minds of the public - win with great visuals / videos and a genuine story . Leave the Republican buffoons exposed in their nakedness - revealing that they have no position other than to continue to put their head in the sand.

Disagree. It’s Republicans: ideological purity and pandering to morons before all else.

Love it!

Congress doing something? hooo boy! It’s not like they have loads of accomplishments lately. The 113th Congress was the most do-nothing Congress in our history as a country. And the 114th looks to be worse.

Wait. Rubio is a republican. That he would be against normalizing relations is expected for several reasons.
He’s a republican
so he opposes anything Obama does
He’s also a Cuban-American
and he’s got dreams of being POTUS

What I’m curious about is why we haven’t heard from Ted Cruz (Cuban/Canadian/American) on this story. He LOVES being on TV

Probably waiting for dad to tell him what to do.

Let’s not forget that he’s a Cuban American who lied about his parents immigration. They left before Castro. The only reason Marco’s pretending to care is because his Cuban support and money comes from the old guard who remain fervently against normalizing relations with Cuba. They’re about as relevant these days as Rubio.

Can’t wait to see what happens if Obama says they are tightening the ‘border’ with Cuba. ie. no longer granting political asylum to every single person who comes here. If Obama made Cuban immigrants follow the same immigration laws as everyone else, Rubio’s head might explode.

God Ruby don’t you realize you and your family will be able to go back home now.

Meh, seems like after some period of time you need to let go. I imagine they could potentially be a good trade partner and such for the US. all things considered. Probably backlash on being weak on the enemy in our midst. Even though they have not really been much for a very long time now.
