Who would think someone of Dershowitz’s heritage would defend a racist?

It usually means that the word was not capitalized(i.e. the beginning of a sentence) in the original. Necessary to indicate you are not quoting verbatim.

Womp, womp, Alan… Womp, womp.

Children are ripped from their parents arms and sent who knows where, asylum seekers are being cruelly, detained, children are being held in detention camps, an entire group of people are being categorized as criminals, animals, and savages and Dershowitz is being shunned at Martha’s Vineyard. Seriously, this man needs help.

It indicates a case change. So, presumably, in Dershowitz’s original editorial, it was lowercase, and TPM appears to believe they are quoting Shakespeare, so they put it in brackets to cap it. Completely ridiculous and distracting and is not used in most published books.

Faux-conservatives like to go around saying, “Actions Have Consequences”.

Indeed they do, counselor, indeed they do.

Hobnob with child abusers, racists, corrupt thugs and incompetent rageaholics, and polite society will shun you. Untwist your knickers, and be thankful “shunning” is all you are getting.

If he’d just vacation at Mar-I-lago (after paying all of the membership fees, etc), he’d definitely be welcomed by the Trump family with open palms.

No, not necessary, unless you are quoting Shakespeare, for example, and parsing his every word or are a lawyer writing a brief or a decision or whatever it is they write.

To be clear: brackets should be used elsewhere in a quotation to indicate any sort of textual change but not at the beginning to indicate a case change.

Claus von Bulow will still be his friend.

True, I overstated a bit. Do find it helpful to indicate a

It’s called freedom of association, Alan, and it works both ways, and it doesn’t violate any of your rights. You should crack a law book once in a while and try to get a grasp on these principles. Or stop showing up on Fox all the time telling us how smart and accomplished you are.
Or give OJ a call. He’ll understand.

Maybe if more awful people were ostracized for awful decisions the world would be a better place

My apologies if somehow I have started a grammar war.

Lets move to a calmer subject.

One should not be shunned for one’s political choices. But supporting Trump goes way beyond “political.” Supporting Trump involves moral choices, and being shunned for those is one of the ways society polices itself.

When I whipped out my NAMBLA membership card, even my own family started edging away.

He is slipping. Years ago he would have seen the futility of this idiotic tirade. Maybe he and Ghoul-liani can split a case of Boost or Nepro.
