Discussion: Deputy AG Says DOJ Crackdown Is Targeting Leakers, Not Journalists

Rosenstein and Sessions both avoided answering the tough questions on this new policy - doesn’t inspire confidence in their intentions.

He also said that if Mueller finds any crime which is outside the scope of the Russia investigation, Mueller will need permission to investigate.

Outside this scope?

In appointing Mueller, however, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein gave him broad authority not only to investigate “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated” with Trump’s campaign, but also to examine “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.”
Rosenstein also gave Mueller the power to investigate “any other matters within the scope of 28 C.F.R. § 600.4(a)” — including perjury, obstruction of justice, destruction of evidence, and intimidation of witnesses.
The mandate’s scope is similar to that given by then-Acting Attorney General James Comey to special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald in 2003 to investigate who leaked the identity of former CIA operative Valerie Plame.

The leaks are coming from Cuck Kushner and First Lady and so-called daughter Ivank Trump.

Maybe Rosenstein was playing to the audience of one, knowing that a slightly inaccurate comment in a public interview wont have any legal significance? Just a guess.
I didn’t see the exact quote, but just a reference to it on Twitter.

Both Rosenstein and Sessions declined to respond after the announcement to a reporter’s shouted question about whether the Justice Department plans “to prosecute journalists” as part of its crackdown.

Because they are speaking to an audience of one. And he wasn’t present.

The new policy is highly classified so if they comment on it they would then be leakers and would have to crack down on themselves. Self-flagellation, the latest stop along the Mobius strip path of DT administrative action.

Leakers or whistle blowers?

That makes sense, but keep in mind that the Russia investigation is very broad, and involves all Trumpers too. But yes, if they find out Don Jr raped a woman once, that would need to be a separate investigation since it’s not related to Russian collusion, etc.

Nice shot by Rosenstein at Trump on this one, Trump wants journalists.

I’d like to see Nunes be the first one to go down.

So the Deputy AG is telling us that there is quite a lot going on within the White House worth leaking to the civilized world and it might be advantageous for the criminally insane to keep it from public knowledge? Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

Didn’t Sessions say that they were going to go after leakers in the media? If a public official sees a crime being committed, don’t they have an obligation to report it? If they didn’t leak wouldn’t that be a misprison of a felony?

Chiselin’ Trump loves whistle blowers, so long as it’s a dog whistle that they’re blowing.

Me too.

The attorney general’s been very clear that we’re after the leakers, not the journalists

Can one say, horse manure? This is all about burning journalistic sources, threatening journalists.
