Discussion: Dems To Hold 12 Presidential Primary Debates, Beginning Next June

Perez turned out to be such a disappointment. He is catering to Sander’s camp, and downplays the requests of majority Democrats. By doing this he explicitly legitimatizes Sanders accusation of “rigged” primary. I have noticed that Sanders supporters are carrying out pro-active campaign to undermine any possible Democratic presidential candidate. They are bashing Beto O’Rourke now, before Harris and Warren got similar treatment. Fractures are already in place, this new DNC schedule will not result in unity, contrary it will deepen disagreement between the camps.

Please don’t have 12 debates with the same stupid Sunday punditry type host. Have some debates hosted by progressive news organization and publications. Just avoid the “gotcha type ones”. I mean Josh Marshal asking questions would be awesome. How about Ebony magazine and Univision hosting a “black and brown” debate focused on minority issues.

I really don’t want to sit through 12 debates hosted by CNN that just ask questions generated by a bunch of people who think Democrats should spend time responding to Republican frames; “Do you like Identity Politics?” “How will you shrink the deficit (without mentioning the GOP blew it up)”, etc

Here’s what should happen before any debate…

I’m not so sure about that. The party rules were changed last June to make it clear that to be a Democratic candidate you have to be a registered Democrat. That was made part of the superdelegate downgrade package.

If only, I expect there will be very little of substance spoken. Ideas are what is needed not more bashing, anyone can bash and rant it is very easy to do so. When it comes to ideas then silence and/or being silenced is the normal result. The last series of debates was long on bashing with very little substance and what was voiced usually lacked much beyond soundbites.

Example of what I mean: A number of years ago as a member of a school board we received a directive from the State Board of Regents to update out parent complaint policy/procedures. There was much yakking around this that the other but in reality very few new ideas were floated. A couple of suggestions myself and another advocated; (1) that of spelling out a timeline and response processes for the 1st time gave the complainant some idea that at least their concerns would be read and (2) a requirement that every complaint also contained a suggested resolution/solution. The result of these ideas being adopted was twofold; (1) state liked the ideas and amended the requirement so that these ideas were mandated and (2) the number of issues received dropped by some 83%, with those received being addressed and resolved within 90 days. The Board of Regents approved our revisions to the policies in record time, never once asking our board to revise or make any adjustments.

Ideas with some substance are what I look for and use to decide how and for whom I can support. If a candidate can’t articulate their ideas off the cuff then I wonder just how sincere they actually are.

I like Sanders BUT not as Presidential material… He and his should STFU, they do not have ideas but sound bites, I want substance which Sanders lacks.

AMEN , amen, amen…

I disagree. The GOP primaries were a circus because they were all nuts and mostly unqualified for the presidency. A Democratic primary will be full of candidates who are well-qualified, well-spoken, and able to fluidly communicate about ideas and policy. In 2008, people fretted about having too many debates as well, but in the end instead of dividing the party, it strengthened it, and impressed America and the world with a well qualified African American and female candidate as the faces of the dems. In the process, Hillary and Obama became better debaters, and the country paid attention to what they were saying, because along with everything else, it made good tv.
