Discussion for article #227862
Respect for the sovereignty of nations is the underlying legal basis of all international treaties regarding the waging of war.
Keep that in mind as you read this from WSWS:
US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel told the House Armed Services Committee that he and Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Martin Dempsey had signed off on detailed plans for air strikes on ISIS targets inside Syria. Referring to the US Central Command, Hagel said: “CENTCOM’s plan includes targeted actions against ISIL [ISIS] safe havens in Syria, including its command and control, logistics capabilities and infrastructure.” He added: “Our actions will not be restrained by a border that exists in name only.” All that is now required is Obama’s approval.

If Russian, Iranian or Chinese military generals declared that a country’s borders would not restrain their military actions would TPM’ers be supportive or outraged by such proclamations?
At what point will Democrats begin their protest against these clearly illegal plans for war inside Syria?
Even the Syrian “government” wants western nations to attack ISIL in Syria. Nice try though.
Please direct me to an official statement from the Syrian government authorizing U.S. airstrikes in their country. Thanks.
From CBS News:
Syria’s foreign minister said on Monday his country welcomed any potential military strikes by by the U.S. in Syria targeting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria’s terrorist bases, but warned that the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad should be warned first.
Nice try.
Several paragraphs down:
The foreign minister warned that any action taken without direct agreement from Damascus would be an “aggression” against Syrian territory and that Syria would not stay idle.
Continues:
The legality of striking Syria is also debatable. Iraqi and Kurdish forces asked for U.S. intervention to deal with ISIS, but the Syrian government has not done so.
Again, Syria has yet to authorize any U.S. military response in their country.
And we can continue to pretend that the CIA, special forces, mercenaries and militias funded, trained and assisted by the U.S. aren’t already operating illegally in Syria.
I know it must be so frustrating to franticly find any and every way to scream “illegal wars” at the Obama administration, it seems to be what you live for, but again, nice try.
That’s exactly what Republican party loyalists said to me when I called out Bush’s illegal wars.
Seems events this evening have overtaken your caterwauling and frantic attempts to preemptively attack President Obama. From CNN:
Did the U.S. consult with the Syrian government beforehand?
A U.S. official says it didn’t coordinate nor warn President Bashar al-Assad about the attacks. But the regime claims it was given a heads-up.
“According to the Syrian Foreign Ministry, the American side informed the Syrian representative to the U.N. yesterday that the U.S. will carry out airstrikes targeting the terrorist organization (ISIS) in Raqqa,” said a banner on the website of the Syrian government’s official news agency, SANA.
