Well, the Special Elections are over and those that want to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN are 5 and O! All the Fake News, all the money spent = 0

ā€“Donald Trump, Jun 20, 2017

That is what he said when they won elections (although technically it was 4 and not 5 but numbers are hard). I donā€™t see signs his vocabulary increased since then. Iā€™m expecting to see him go full victim complex on this one.

But if recent trends continue, they could be looking at a major bounce-back at the state legislative level, as well as having a real shot at winning back control of the House.

A ā€˜major bounce-back at the state levelā€™ isnā€™t the same as taking control of the state lege. Most GOP-majority state chambers are 10+ seats and arenā€™t likely to flip to Democratic control.

But Iā€™ve been told that Democrats have no message, canā€™t relate to average voters and something something Nancy Pelosi.

These are low turnout, special elections and Dems are swinging them by more than 30 points. If we overperform at just half that, or a third, we flip a bunch of statehouses, congressional seats, and governorships. Thereā€™s more reason for hope, IMO, than pessimism.

That is good news. I donā€™t think state legislature special elections have gotten much coverage.

More evidence that white voters have quietly warmed to the Democratic Party over the course of 2017. We havenā€™t seen this kind of trend since '06, and at the local level, the swing has been much sharper to Team Blue. This has a lot to do with Trump but also about how Dems gave everything they had to protect Obamacare. The racial element that drove white ambivalence to universal health care and medicaid seems to have changed.

The Governor and legislative elections in Virginia are going to be a sign of where the country stands. That VA Gov race is now a proxy Trump-Clinton race post #charlottesville. If Dems are able to win the Gov, AG, and make gains in the state leg, it will be a very good sign that Dems can go up against a GOP campaign that emphasizes hot button race issues and win.

We need more articles like this, to show that weā€™re getting some wins that arenā€™t merely ā€˜getting Trump to agree to fund the government for 3 months without wall bull-ogna*.ā€™

*Like bologna, but with bull, get it? :stuck_out_tongue:

State legislative seats are what counts. Thatā€™s where all the decisions about your daily life get made. Thatā€™s where candidates for higher office get started. Thatā€™s where party control of the states means party control of the country.

If Trump and the GOP remain as reviled next year as now, they could end up getting crushed by a Democratic wave on the state level, and perhaps in federal elections. At this point, the Democrats need to shut the GOP down on all their issues. This includes refusal to give them any victories, and aggressively investigating Republican corruption in the state and federal level.

Itā€™s also where we need to win to have any chance of undoing the gerrymandering that was done after the last census. That is if Rā€™s allows a census to be done. Last I heard the funding and staffing for the census were so far behind as to run the risk of it not happening or the results being completely useless.

Oh, Iā€™d say most of the racial element that drove so many white voters ambivalence to universal healthcare and Medicaid was the race of the guy in the WH.

I donā€™t believe the GOPers can get away with not doing a census. On the funding, youā€™re right ā€“ if they still control the pocketbook at that time, they might try and fund a crappily-done census instead of one that counts as many as possible and properly classifies them.

They may try to screw it up (or just screw it up because of incompetence) but the census is one of those things called for in that pesky ā€œConstitutionā€ document they claim to be so fond of (ā€œof which they claim to be fondā€? )

Methinks ā€œYet Another Lawsuitā€ may be in their collective futuresā€¦

Article I, Section 2 of the United States Constitution, states: "Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States ā€¦ according to their respective Numbers ā€¦
