Well the picture Kavanaugh painted with his past is not pretty. And that does not include his alleged crime. If I were to go with the popular sentiment, then this should not stand as well. It would be hypocritical to try to ignore it. A lot will depend on what Northam has to say about it.
I would like to remind everyone here not to pull a Franken and condemn the man before we know the full story on this. There are a lot of “ifs” about this. If he was in blackface or the robe, that’s a problem. However, if he wasn’t, then FFS, don’t crucify the man before he can answer for these accusations. If he’s guilty as charged, he’ll answer for this event, one way or another. I’m not doubting that, but before i throw any stones not named Roger, i want to hear what he has to say.
I hate to say it, but I doubt this is survivable. First you have to assume he’s one of the two, and that it was an attempt at humor. I imagine he didn’t anticipate a life in politics then but damn, it was 1984 and he was in his 20s. How you think that’s edgily funny I don’t know; it’s just a terrible lapse in judgment. It seems implausible for him to be completely uninvolved in creating or approving that page but maybe he was. I’m not optimistic.
Well if it’s him he has to go. It was the 80’s not the 50’s, if you didn’t have the sense not to put (or allow) that picture in your yearbook page that’s really saying something. But I should also point out there’s an editorial in the WSJ crying great tears over Dems being mean about the racist things a Trump judicial pic said in college, so if Northam goes I will have to insist that Republicans agree that’s disqualifying. Which, of course, they won’t.
The thing is there are ulterior motives all over this. The folks who broke this story are conservative. If they have a record of calling out anyone no matter their politics, I would be inclined to jump on the bandwagon of condemnation.
Thanks for the link to a fuller write up. It’s quite good and gives a fair amount of context for how he has conducted himself as a politician.
I also appreciated that the WaPo drove out to the school library to confirm that the image was genuine.
Still shaking my head at the fact it was his medical school yearbook.
Ultimately, it will be up to the Virginia voters, but if he’s really built the relationship with the black community implied by WaPo, then this may be a survivable scandal.
If it were a page in the same yearbook I’d say “well yeah, racists in Virginia in the 1980s, who’d have thunk it”, but on his own? The page by which he wants to represent himself to his peers? C’mon, man.
I’m not saying the man should be thrown in prison. He can go make bank on the lobbying circuit or whatever. He doesn’t belong in elected office.
