Discussion: Defense Chief Mattis Says He's Not In Iraq To 'Seize Anybody's Oil'

He is actively erasing some more days from his tenure right there…

There may be one sane, knowledgeable person in this administration. The problem is, he’s working for Trump, who knows nothing and cares less about anything other than acting like a cartoon strongman.

He’s not there to seize anybody’s oil, but what about those guys over there by the palm tree, the ones with the big hats?

Translation: “Go ahead you fucking moron, fire me, I don’t give a shit. I’ve seen action in Fallujah and spent the night with my men in a freezing Afghan foxhole, and those soldiers’ turds have more honor than you.”

During the campaign, President Tiny Inauguration was saying “to the victor go the spoils” like some Middle Ages crusader. He was probably wishing he could get in on the raping and pillaging.

I wonder what the betting markets say about how long it will take Mattis to be fired? I’d put money on about three more days of contradicting Hair Furor.

“We should have kept the oil. Maybe we’ll have another chance,” he said.

Well, I guess if we got "The Hurt Locker II" out of the deal I'd be OK with it.

Seizing Iraqi oil is a Trump wet dream. Mattis ain’t gonna go there.

How long can a subordinate continue to contradict the boss without getting fired (J. Edgar Hoover doesn’t count)?

I have three more days in the office pool.

It is actually pretty freakin’ SAD that the ‘Trump explainers’ have to come out after every utterance from the Orange one’s mouth and tell us what he REALLY meant to say…or to just have the balls to say ‘I’M not there to do…whatever vile garbage drips from his mouth!’

It must really suck to rise to the rank of General and, in your next job, be the mop-man for a loose-lipped moron. Or the guy who carries the shovel behind an incontinent elephant, if you prefer.

Mad Dog Mattis is possibly the only Cabinet member/close Trump adviser who doesn’t seek to destroy the agency/organization he is charged with leading. He knows about U.S. history and government. He seems to truly care about the military, the country and our institutions. If he keeps talking like he has been the past couple of days about the media and the oil (especially as it contradicts or makes Trump look bad), I might actually start to like the guy and hope he stays around to be a buffer on Trump and his band of crazies. Would Trump fire the one competent, non-compromised person he’s got - and will Mattis have the fortitude to continue to serve the country in spite of Trump?

I dunno; Trump’s got a thing for generals. He could make it a week.

I would like to believe Mattis.

Unfortunately, Trump says we absolutely should seize the resources we want from other nations. If I’m not sure who to believe, then how in God’s name are other nations supposed to know who to believe?

what’s the prize?

ummm, I think Mattis will be the Defense Secretary for as long as he wants. So I’m going to say that he will be there until at least 2019.

Trump sees him as a role model and so does McCain and Graham (and the rest of that lot).

While it is good to see that there is a grown up in the Office of Sec of Defence we still need to be concerned that our truditional of civilian control of the military has been eroded by putting a General in that position. Little Donnie should not have offered the job to a general and the General should not have taken the job.

Sad that the Secretary of Defense has to make apologies and contradict the so-called President, to walk back the criminal desires of said so-called President instead of being able to focus on beating ISIL, and securing the region?
