Discussion: Dammit, I Love This Country So Much: Why Liberals Still Adore Ron Swanson

Ha. You nailed it. A paragraph would’ve been plenty.

I must be the only person who has no idea who Ron Swanson is. I never watched the show “Parks and Recreation”. It didn’t interest me.

This article is way too long about something I don’t give a shit about. But what does this mean: “Both the left and the right invoke freedom, hard work, patriotism, tolerance, courage, loyalty, fair play, and curiosity as a form of gut-wrenching rhetoric”? What does “as a form of gut-wrenching rhetoric” mean?

It’s one of those phrases that sounds substantive upon initial review but has no actual meaning when you stop to scrutinize the individual words.

Got it. Thanks.

I like him because of his diet. (ALL the bacon and eggs, etc.)

What the hell did I just read?

Not the only one, my friend.

I don’t know Ron Swanson; I hardly know who he is. But I do know this: to a typical American above a certain age, the primary difference between “liberal” and “conservative” is the way George Bush the Elder pronounced “liberal” as if he had just taken a bite of crap. His spittle-laden rendering of the word influenced a whole generation’s opinion of liberals.

Yes, I do consider myself a liberal. Why do you ask? :smiling_imp:

I avoid The Slice to avoid this stuff.

I’ve never watched this show, and I’d never even heard of it until a few months ago. But I can’t see anything to admire in this fellow the way you’ve described him. If he’s getting paid to drink whiskey and do crosswords, he is being decidedly hateful to the people who pay him from their tax money. While I am decidedly liberal, I can’t abide people who don’t do the work they’re paid for at some level of ability. In a cooperative work environment, they let down their fellow workers. If he does this while criticizing the amount of taxes collected by Governments, he’s engaged in unbearable hypocrisy.

Happy I’ve never seen the show.
Wished I hadn’t wasted time on this article.
