Discussion for article #244415
Trevor really has Trump’s number. Just look at the tape. Oh how The Donald must want to strangle him.
Someone please send The Rump some photos of the #YallQaeda wives, girlfriends and daughters from inside the secret Oregon rebel base. Plant a little discord up in there.
- Yeah. I’d hit that myself. --WIN
- Disgusting! Get that sow away from me. --WIN
Two only slightly related point: First, while Trevor looks good and sounds good and seems like a nice guy, I’m afraid I don’t find him very funny. Granted Jon Stewart is an impossible act to follow so he has my sympathy, but still…
Second, because of the above I couldn’t watch the whole thing and didn’t get to where he was talking about Trump so maybe he said something along the following lines. But I find it interesting that we’ve heard a lot recently about the psychological study that shows that conservatives allegedly have a higher disgust factor than liberals. Some people (Jonathan Haidt, e.g.) have even used that as part of an argument to make the preposterous claim that conservatives have a more developed or nuanced system of morality than liberals. So it’s striking that Trump and his followers have their disgust factor kick in when the issue is a grown woman going tinkle. But when it comes to envisioning a man openly wanting to fuck his daughter? Apparently, that’s fine–even endearing.
It seems to me that the emotion of disgust like almost everything else in conservative psychology is manifest in completely the wrong circumstances.
The disparity between the headline the accompanying picture made me chuckle =)
Ivanka looks exactly like Donald – he really just wants to fuck himself.
This. They may have a stronger disgust factor, but that doesn’t mean they’re disgusted by the same things.
I have become a Trevor fan after a few shows and thought his standup special was excellent. But… I do wish he would stop this particular bit. It’s very disrespectful of Ivanka and her family. There are so MANY other Trump actions that are comedy fodder, but enough of this please.
TBF, I’ve met Ivanka. Nice girl. Absolutely gorgeous. I can understand where he’s coming from.
Totally agree on all your points.
That’s disgusting.
Yeah, I’ve met her too, and if you take away the millions of dollars spent on her appearance, she’s no prettier than the cashier in my local deli.
Trevor is not a naturally funny person. Agreed. However, when he sticks to the script, he does well enough. They need to tell him to stop doing that imitation of a white person’s voice. Not because I think it’s racist or anything, it’s just not funny. He has his moments. However, the producers/writers need to play to his strengths. He’s better when he’s being smart…not funny.
“Trevor is not a naturally funny person…He’s better when he’s being smart…not funny.” Painful, but true. So I’m not at all clear on why he was chosen for this position. The whole attraction of Jon Stewart was that he is (obviously) both extremely smart and extremely funny. Hard to see how the show can last when the new host has at best only 50% of the abilities of the former one.
Its not about her – its about her letch of a father. But to be honest, I will not shed a tear for her. While I get that she can’t help being his daughter, I will point out that she sure uses his resources and the Trump name to market her crappy shoes and clothing. So. in my opinion, she is, as well as her two murderous brothers, fair game.
Nose job, breast augmentation and dental veneers are the most obvious investments.
Even The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore has its flaws. Larry is a funnier guy than Trevor, but they don’t use him correctly either. The panel segment always has some little known comic, or comics, hogging the segment with their lame shtick. And lately, it’s always his cast members, so they are obviously having issues booking those segments. So, I’d much rather a one on one segment with Larry, a highly intelligent man, going one on one, and filling the void that Stewart left with smart, funny, in-depth, poignant interviews. Because the one thing Trevor is atrocious at, early on, is the interview segment. He’s awkward and dull. He’s just not quick on his feet. Wilmore can go toe to toe with the heavy hitters in a more funny, thought provoking segment…if he can avoid going for the cheap laugh. But, to your point, yes, I fear for the future of the Daily Show. I’m not sure Noah has the staying power. I thought Jordan Klepper or Jason Jones were better options. I still think President Obama would be great at hosting it. I’m not sure if he would want to, or if it’s beneath the legacy of the office, but I think he would be sensational. Someone mentioned that on here once, and I thought it was a great…GREAT…idea!
Those of us old enough to remember when Jon started hosting The Daily Show should recall that Jon himself wasn’t nearly as good back then as he later became, in his prime. My own observation about Trevor Noah is that he’s “least good” when delivering a writer’s joke that was clearly written, maybe out of habit, for Jon Stewart. By contrast, he kills the newer material. One can only hope that, as the writers adapt to his voice, the show will again become the indispensable social commentary it was formerly.
Fair point. Stewart did vastly improve over time. It’s also fair to point out what Matthew said earlier…Stewart didn’t have to follow anyone of note. Kilborn was a failure, in many respects. The Daily Show was a dying brand that Stewart resurrected and built into this juggernaut we know now. I mean, for Pete’s sake, Stewart went on to be voted the most trusted name in news in 2009, I believe! That’s unreal! So, he didn’t have that burden of following a legend like Noah has. You’re right, maybe we’re being too harsh on him too soon. Point taken.
Yeah. The writers seem to be spending more effort trying to shape Noah into Stewart 2.0, rather than write material that better fits his own actual persona/comedic style. Hopefully that’ll change soon.
