In general, they don’t seem at all concerned or upset about that part of the promise. They are afraid of the imaginary hordes crossing the border (with drugs, disease and babies that may qualify for some social programs and might someday vote against Republican objectives), and they don’t particularly care who pays for the construction. (To be fair, there is a lot of waste in government spending, although mostly in the defense budget, which they consider sacred.) They want a wall to protect them, and like most fantasies, challenging it just seems to make it more necessary in their eyes.

Then no deal. Anyone who enters negotiations by unilaterally taking something they want off the table before the talks even start are doomed! The Dems need to finally get the DACA issue solved and those folks protected with permanent residency and a path to citizenship. Giving the Gropenfuhrer some expanse of wall in exchange for the Dreamers is well worth it.
