Discussion: DA: 'I Refuse To Ruin The Lives' Of Arrested Alabama Football Players

Gotta love that DA for his deeply held religious believes. God, Guns, Gays, and Football. Not in that order.

I would bet they bought the gun from a friend, who bought it from a friend, etc. I don’t think they were accused of stealing the actual gun.

Who gives a fuck about life lessons, this is FOOTBALL, it means when you are no longer productive in the game no one gives a shit…

This all happened in Louisiana…and given how most people in Louisiana feel about local football players that spurn LSU to play for Alabama, the DA’s words are just mind boggling.

I don’t like sports, I don’t watch them, and I generally dislike jocks, not to mention the ‘good ol boy’ club this thing reeks of, but how is taking a person’s past record into consideration anything new? Instead of hanging around on the streets causing trouble, these guys spent all their time busy with their passion. That’s a good thing, and this DA is just a knucklehead for characterising this thing in the way he did.

Here’s the thing: This happened in Louisiana. The DA dropped charges against two highly recruited players who publicly spurned LSU to play for Alabama. If there’s one thing that people in Louisiana hate more than the Alabama football team itself, it’s local players who leave to play for Alabama. Cam Robinson is especially…erm…disliked because of his very tumultuous recruitment. It’s childish, but frankly there is no love between these two players and many people in their home state.

Monroe, which is at the top right of the ‘boot,’ isn’t deep purple and gold territory, but there’s still local resentment when hometown players go out of state after receiving an offer from LSU, especially when they go to Bama. The deeper you get into the state, the stronger that resentment gets. This DA did NOTHING to help his political career, and actually made life more difficult for himself. If I were him, I wouldn’t stay in state and drive further south than Alexandria…if he does, he’s gonna get a whole lot of speeding/parking/illegal lane change/etc tickets. No joke.

DA: “We ruin the lives of everyone else who ruins the lives of victims to stop them from ruining more lives… BUT HEY IT’S BAMA FOOTBALL WE ARE TALKIN ABOUT! We believe in ruining their brains and lives slowly over time hit after hit on the un-air conditioned field for the sake of our donors, alumni and national ranking. Sure. Most players are law abiding citizens who also labor in the hot sun, but it’s better to minimize their achievements than reduce the Tide’s overall level of play.”

“I refuse to ruin the lives of two young men who have spent their adolescence and their teenage years working and sweating while we were all home in the air conditioning,” Jones said.

Classic Southern passive-aggressiveness.

Foxnews will be reporting this as just another instance of black privilege.

So I am assuming that the district attorney will now ask the state court to invalidate the convictions of anybody currently in jail for drug possession…because he doesn’t want to ruin their lives either…

The officer only approached their car to smell the pot smoke because they are black. White kids don’t get busted for pot in anything like the same proportion, nor prosecuted as severely if among the unfortunate who do.

Obviously, its worse for a judge to go light on black 'ballers than on “good” white kids – or so it would seem from some of the comments here. TPM is drawing an increasingly conservative crowd. Why else would this story have even been featured here? Unless you run ten stories about white kids not being prosecuted – or even busted in the first place – because of their “character,” this is just racist.

Jerry Jones sure as hell doesn’t mind “ruining” lives of everyone else who enters his system, and does so with gusto! Northeast Louisiana, like most of this god-rotten state, is “lock 'em up” central. Can’t pay a ridiculously inflated fine? Tough, jail for you. Officers smelled marijuana but found none? Tough, jail time. Especially the non-heartlandishly-hued. These are some very lucky young men.

Disgusting Jock Culture.

Do whatever you like as long as you can play some stupid fucking game well, I guess.

Umm…SEC Football, like all college football…is played on Saturdays (with an occasional Thursday night game), not Sundays.

I don’t mind giving these young men a break. I would like to know if the prosecutor does the same for others who aren’t football players.
