Discussion: Cruz: We Should 'Make The 2016 Election A Referendum On The Supreme Court'

Discussion for article #246011

There is a long tradition that you don’t do this in an election year," Cruz told “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd.

By this standard, there is also a long tradition of The Cubs winning the Pennant.

Once again Cruz lies without blinking = sadistic lying bastard.

Hey teddy Canadian - Reagan got Kennedy confirmed in his last year.

The fact is the Senate has not blocked a nominee since 1880 in the US!

Maybe Cruz is
mixing up the US with Canada😜

Cruz you do not have the authority to circumvent our Government. After all, you were not born here and it is very questionable whether or not you or qualified “Constitutionally” to run for POTUS. President Obama will fulfill his obligation and you of course can do what you always do, NOTHING!

The Republicans in their arrogance yet again try to neuter the President of the United States. The SCOTUS has a opening and the President has the power and even the duty to appoint a new justice in order for the Court to do its job. Let’s now watch yet another months or year long tantrum by the looney right and see how it plays out. Scalia was appointed in Reagan’s last year I believe. What’s the difference here?

We’ve had two referenda. One in 2008, one in 2012. President Obama won both times.

Maybe this exact circumstance has not happened in a long time, but there is no “long tradition” of anything. As usual Cruz will lie, exaggerate, makeup stories, and his own facts. This bullshit does not even deserve a response.

The president can make a SC recess appointment today if he wanted to. He has until 2/22/16.

And there’s nothing stopping him (according to my 20 min of research).

I’ll leave it to the head of state of Cruz’s native country to give the only response needed

“It has been 80 years since a Supreme Court vacancy was nominated and confirmed in an election year. There is a long tradition that you don’t do this in an election year.”

Was there ever a case in the last 80 years when a Justice died or retired in an election year?

Was there ever a case where a President ever waited a year to nominate a Justice, just because the Senate wanted to wait for the next President?

What is the precedent for what Ted Cruz is demanding?

Where’s the precedent? Rock Ridge Precedent. “The President is a Ni(clang!).”

There is a long tradition in America that we do not nominate foreigners to be our President.

Let’s review:.

  • Obama is the President for the next 11 months.

  • Article 2 section 2 of the Constitution says the President SHALL appoint judges to the Supreme Court, with the advice and consent of the Senate.

  • There is now a vacancy on the Supreme Court.

I guess Ted Cruz was sleeping during those classes at Harvard

Ah, yes, the Senate confirmed Justice Kennedy in (Saint) Ronald Reagan’s last year in office - a little fact that Justin Davidson pointed out to Senator Cruz in last night’s debate, to boos from the audience (How dare you bring facts into a GOP debate…)

Of course bearded jelly-mold Chuck Todd couldn’t bring himself to raise that point on Browbeat the Press.

I move to request President Barack Obama nominate @Jalus to the Supreme Court of the United States.

“Cruz said that the Senate does “not remotely” have an obligation to consider President Barack Obama’s nomination for Scalia’s replacement and that the American people should decide.”

First of all, YES the senate does have a constitutional obligation to consider any and all of President Obama’s nominations.

Secondly, The American people did decide! WE elected President Obama TWICE!

Go back under your rock!
