The way Cruz only considers conservatives to be “true Americans” should send a shiver down all non-conservative spines. With Cruz as President, the current voter suppression tactics deployed by GOP will look like child’s play. I could see Cruz doing things like forbidding companies not run by conservatives or located in blue states from getting government contracts.
Trump is a buffoon, but Cruz is an ideological monster.
Speaking as one born and raised in NY, I’d say each New Yorker is an Other when viewed from the perspective of non-New Yorkers.
@adampomataSen. Cruz is a sitting Senator
P.S. Maddow had a long piece about Ted, and here’s the takeaway. He won his one and only election in his entire career, his Senate seat, by only 600,000-odd votes because the election was held strangely on July 31 (on a 93 degree day), and so it is only now that media focus is turning to him and asking who is this guy…
Maybe Cruz thought this would be Liberty University where the students are required to attend these type of political events. Great that these students refused to be political props
There’s a link in the story to the NY Daily News reporting on what the students did. The News has run front pages images of Ted since he’s been campaigning, here’s one.
Couldn’t be more impressed by these kids. This old Bronx born guy knows that there are so many quality young people growing up in the community. Ted Cruz saw the Bronx in a movie once and thinks it’s reality.
I’ve recently had a change of mind about protesting the right for a speaker - no matter who it is - to address a group of people - no matter who it is.
First, I don’t think that allowing a person or group to speak is an endorsement of that view and especially in an educational setting. I think it is important to uphold a free and open society and let people with opposing views make their case.
Second, I think it would have been a much stronger and more instructive moment for the school to facilitate a discussion with Sen. Cruz and let the students stand up an critique, rebut, counter argue, etc. those things they find objectionable.
Third, Sen. Cruz is a sitting Senator and 2nd place Republican primary candidate and no matter what you think of him he is not part of the fringe.
Lastly, I would love to see videos of young people taking an active interest in political debate and expressing their point of view face to face with Sen. Cruz.
Something on an order approaching 97 of the 100 members of the Senate thinks Cruz is a vitriolic, unhinged loose cannon, disloyal to his peers and dismissive of any dissent from any quarter. If you know 100 people and 97 of them avoid you like the plague and wouldn’t piss in your mouth if your teeth were on fire you’re fringe.
Personally, I wish they hadn’t sent the letter but had shunned him instead. I would have loved seeing Count Dracula dashing around the school, trying frantically to get someone to shake his hand or listen to a speech of his.
I agree with the sentiment; however, these campaign events tend to be tightly controlled and scripted. The end result would not be great open discussion or learning event but a photo op with children as unwilling props.
