The longer any of these GOP candidates talk or have their surrogates speaking for them, the more unhinged they become, and the more unhinged they sound to the rest of the reality-based world. This woman is comparing ISIS inspired radical extremists to communism. Can it get any more idiotic than that? Joe McCarthy was a fear-mongering extremist himself, willing to indict so many totally innocent people just on his say so. He was willing to misuse the power of his position within the government to go after whoever he wanted in order to make a bigger name for himself. I remember Ralph Edwards and his show “This is your life”” shoing up to interview a neighbor for her work with the FBI as an undercover person.
I remember how completely despicable McCarthy was. And I remember how he crashed and burned when finally confronted and shown to be the paranoid bully he was.

It is appalling to me that someone can run for President, advised by people who otherwise wouldn’t be seen outside their basement without a tin-foil hat on. Is this the state of American politics? A major party that speaks for half the country, taking seriously the ravings of those who still argue that Oswald was framed?
I thought it was bad enough when it was just Michelle Bachman saying the same things as McCarthy, dusted off for a 50 year later audience… but to actively support a man almost universally reviled as the figurehead for the worst impulses of a fear driven era…

I think TPM should say a lot more. If it is going to report the words of these despicable kooks, it has an obligation to shine a light on the roaches. The name “Center for Security Policy” is innocuous. Provide some examples of how nutty and bigoted they are. Don’t give them uncritical coverage.
