Discussion for article #228297
Still some deep deep pockets of insanity around marijuana use, of course.
“Coats, who has been unable to find steady work because of his marijuana use…”
This sentence implies that the usage is the problem, when it’s clearly not - it’s the senseless laws that need amending.
I don’t care about weed, other than decriminalization for small amounts and use for medical conditions. But…
"The case is being watched closely around the country and could have big implications for (any legal personal behavior) in …Though the Colorado case involves medical marijuana, the court’s decision could also affect how companies treat employees who (do things on their personal time the corporation doesn’t like).
Hooray. Legal precedent to permit Corporate punishment of legal personal actions. So, when can the corporate conscience gain impunity to fire people for abortion, birth control, homosexuality, premarital sex, eating potato chips?
Shame, shame on Dish Network. I hoped they were decent since they don’t belong to ALEC. I wanted to switch as soon as the verizon contract was done. Another illusion bites the dust. Guess it’s time to go off the cable grid.
As the article points out (indirectly), these types of issues won’t get sorted out until/unless marijuana use gets sorted out at the federal level (medical or otherwise). However, the hypocrisy on this topic is unbelievable. Had Mr. Coats tested positive for say, oxycodone, which he had a prescription for and didn’t interfere with his job performance, he wouldn’t have (indeed couldn’t have) been fired. He isn’t tested for alcohol or nicotine, at least at the local level, why should he be able to be fired for a legal act in his off hours? How many workers across this nation have showed up hung over on the Monday after the SuperBowl and not gotten fired?
And by the way, why aren’t the Republicans backing this guy? Here is a poster child for wanting to work for a living and not living off the welfare/disability dime!!
Why are we arguing federal law in the State Supreme Court? Nothing about this case makes any sense. Pot is legal in Colorado and so is whiskey. We’re talking about state labor laws. Why can’t people who drink alcohol off duty, be fired. Are we going to give Comcast and Wal-mart the power to decide what employees do after work? Somebody needs to step back and take a deep breath.
