Imagine that a Republic governor leaving a likely Democratic seat open as long as possible. I am gob smacked.
Fair point, but you donât really think Yertle would stall things, do you?
Yes, it has, but the resiliency of the residents is amazing. I was born and raised in Detroit - went to high school and college downtown. I moved to California years ago, but I still have family there. None of them live within the city limits anymore but close by, and some of them still work there. I was back visiting last summer and my sister and I took the Q-line downtown one day. The place was packed â I couldnât believe it â it used to be a ghost town. There were some events going on, but nothing major. Nothing that would account for the throngs of people. And it was an incredibly diverse crowd, too. Did my heart good! Itâs gonna come back â no thanks to the governor or state legislators.
I donât follow the local politics that closely any more, but from an outsiderâs point of view I think itâs a good thing that Mayor Duggan was re-elected. I know itâs not fair to hold the sins of the father against the son, but personally I donât think Detroit needs another mayor named Coleman Young!
Stall things? Yertle, what you talking about man?
My thought, exactly. Itâs not as if there are any close votes expected in the House any time in the next year. A strong Democratic voice would still be a voice in the wilderness. Finally, thereâs virtually no chance that Conyersâ district will go red, no matter when the election happens.
So donât resign. Retirement in disgrace was plenty good.
Conyers had a platform and used it. Good luck to anyone trying that out of office.
Snyder I get and loathe: he believes that government officials should not be accountable to voters.
I have no idea what Jonathan Kinloch and the 13th District think they are doing. Leaving a seat open for 11 months so that more voters will choose who gets it for the remains month is beyond absurd.
Itâs not as if there are any close votes expected in the House any time in the next year.
Representatives do a lot more than just vote. There is something called âconstituent servicesâ that includes helping folk resolve problems with Social Security, Medicare, the VA and other government agencies. Also they make nominations to West Point and the other service academies.
Michiganâs 13th district will be without a Representative for over a year.
But hey, thanks to Michiganâs Emergency Manager law, city folk living under the thumb of Governor Snyder are used to having no representation.
exactly my thought. Detroit residents are now being screwed over like this for the second time. This is ridiculous and disgusting.
âDetroit, a city of about 680,000, currently does not have any resident serving in Congress.â
There are two States (Vermont, Wyoming, and several close contenders) that have 3x the representation of Detroit (1 rep, 2 senators), yet the Republican gov says it ainât necessary.
Democrats were very foolish to insist on this resignation right awayâdidnât they even imagine that theyâd lose the vote for an entire year?
Meanwhile Trump is still in the White House and Roy Moore is about to win Alabama.
And ding bat Nancy Pelosi and the ever weak Chuck Schumer wonder why the Republicans kick ass and take no prisoners and keep their majority in the House and the Senate and pass tax bils that clobber the hell out of Americaâs bottom 90%.
Democrats will never win back a majority if they think politics is not a contact sportâŚthe term snow flake comes to mind!
Really? Just last week the House barely got the tax reform bill to conference. I donât doubt that the House will pass whatever crazy bill the Freedom Caucus forces Ryan to bring to the floor, but at the same time, not having the full complement of Democrats allows blue-state Republicans to dodge voting for something that could torpedo them in November.
I guess Iâm wrong on this one. But Iâm an old man. Iâm confused.
Really, really off topic - but no place to put this. A powerful resignation letter from the State Dept:
(click to read the letter - esp her closing sentence.)
No, representation without taxation is the GOP way - little people pay taxes and have no voice - corporations donât and run the senate
Pelosi tried to acknowledge Conyerâs service as a civil rights icon and to let him retire with dignity. The push from the left was he had to leave immediately.
Once again, yet another Republican decides all by himself that he has the power to trample on democracy.
The only thing worse than a government bureaucrat is a Republican government bureaucrat.
To MI 13th District: You may begin to understand what we who live in Washington, DC, have lived with for more than 200 years. At least you can complain to your Senators.
