Discussion: Conservatives Use Eric Garner Decision To Rail Against The Nanny State

Discussion for article #230788

I’m glad they sided with us even if it’s for the wrong reason.

Hard to argue with video - maybe that’s why police are against the idea of body cameras?

Why the need to arrest Garner at all? Why not give him a ticket and move on. Don’t the police have better things to do anyway?

Had Garner been white, he’d have gotten a ticket or summons.

But Garner wasn’t white, so now he’s dead, and the murderer is walking around free to kill again.

Chill, Republicans. I’m sure Garner “looked like a demon”, so it’s all good.

Good gawd.
This is not “big government”. This is the police force and it’s cronies deciding - no matter what - police officers who murder citizens don’t have to stand trial. Double points if the victim is black.

But don’t worry, in a few hours these same people will decide Garner was a demon thug, had multiple arrests, several baby mommas so therefore deserved what he got.

And then we will move on the the next grand jury non-indictment - Tamir Rice.

To be fair, it seems like they are pointing out an aspect of the situation which should not exist that led to the confrontation not “using the decision” as a launching point to “rail against the nanny state”.
They also happen to be right.
Poorer communities have people who legally smoke tobacco but can’t afford to buy a whole pack when their addiction prods them.
Why can’t “loosies” be bought and sold?
What’s the big fucking deal?
Anyone who has ever been a smoker understands the irritability that the craving can cause and I’d really prefer that people I encounter on the streets of New York not be irritable.

Or to put it another way . . . government would have been a lot smaller if Garner had been white.

so the one person they right doesn’t blame is the police officer who actually killed Mr. Garner using a choke hold that was prohibited by department policy. R-I-g-h-t…

It does seem like tobacco is really pivotal to the “tea party” and many other conservative groups. Their “taxed enough already” goes to their tobacco taxes yet they clearly do not want to say that

Mr. Garner’s mistake was the size of his “crime.” In NYC it is now crystal clear that the authorities can legally kill you for selling a single cigarette on the street. Yet if you conspire to create, market, and fraudulently sell toxic securities that corrupt an economy, crash the system, and throw thousands out of work with a diminished net worth, you are given a socialized “industrial” subsidy, retain your job, and get a bonus, too. If you are going to commit crime in our modern cities, make sure it is a really big one.

Hmm. Well. At least they didn’t blame Barbara Streisand for this one. Progress?

No reason they should be against body cams now. If they know they can murder anyone* and no grand jury will indict.

Seems like they argued with video pretty successfully here.

Nope! Just wait a day or so. I’m sure the woowoo’ Rightie Radio Wingnuttery will explain how this was all Garner’s fault for being born black and Keith Ablow will be featured on FUX News to explain how it’s all the fault of black fathers for having black children.
Don’t laugh…that’s not much of an exaggeration.
Why…hell…Here’s Mike “The Huckster” Huckabee outraged that black people don’t want to be shot or killed, and further explaining how dangerous it is that African Americans think the First Amendment applies to them too!!!

Yep. Another law that disproportionately affects the poor. I mean really, anyone think there is an epidemic of “loosie” sales down on Wall Street?

Prior to the November elections, the reaction would have been:

Democrats have convinced minorities that they are victims, so they are responsible when minorities are victimized.
