Discussion: Congress Goes On Holiday Break After Doing Bare Minimum To Avert Shutdown

Nice half-assed job, everyone. Back-slaps all around.

…but once rebuffed on immigration they worked to keep the bill mostly free of add-ons, figuring that they’ll hold greater leverage next month.

Where have I heard this before? Oh, yeah! It was three months ago when we were all congratulating Chuck and Nancy for having given themselves so much leverage in the December shutdown fight!

And screw the children on CHIP and the Dreamers. (We already screwed the American people in the tax bill.)

We need to keep yelling at Chuck and Nancy (and our representatives, too, for those of us lucky enough to have Democrats in Congress) until they get some spine.

Glad we got CHIP into this bill. When Jones gets to the Senate, I think CHIP will be reauthorized in full. Our challenge is DACA. I’m glad to see so many Dems willing to vote no on the CR. By making this issue a priority we are telling all immigrant POC that we have their back.

With respect to DACA, I don’t think red state Dems will vote to shut down the gov’t in an election year. It’s just not good politics for them. So Dems will need to pressure guys like Rubio (a guy I think might be an early retiree from the Senate even as soon as early next year), Flake, Graham and others who profess to be pro DACA to get it done.

I also think Trump might just veto the bill and say that he can’t solve DACA unless he gets his wall. For Trump, I think he’s going to do everything possible to get the economy, tax cuts and immigration into the conversation. We Dems need to prepared to go after him and the GOP on his record, sexual harassment and on #trumprussia.

“At some point we’ve got to make the hard decisions,” said Republican Sen. John Thune of South Dakota.

Ah Capt. Obvious chimes in. So Thune more missiles or children’s health insurance.

If you only yell at Nancy and Chuck here, into cyberspace, the results will be bupkus.

The fight over CHIP will be the House, not the Senate. I believe that if the House passed a bill right now extending CHIP, it would sail through the Senate. So Jones’ vote isn’t all the pivitol on that one.

Likewise, but much worse, the House is where the fight over DACA will take place. Remember, Rubio got his immigration bill through the Senate, and then it died in the House. Ryan has even less interest in pursuing the matter than Boehner did.

The deeply saddening part of this, is Democrats just surrendered their best battlefield to fight for these things…TWICE. In one month. It doesn’t give me a lot of hope for January being much better.

Which isn’t for defense at all.

It is to fund war and chaos in the Middle East, as American Aryan zealots seek to usher in the Second Coming so their small group can ascend into heaven.

That’s what our military taxes are for now.

Are they cheering themselves for keeping the government running? I manage to pay my electric bill every month, I guess I’m a genius too.

I think that unless the Dems start to make the argument to their constituents, and to recognize that they are in a fight to the death kind of war with the republicans, there will never be a good time for them to “stand their ground.”

DACA is an important issue, but CHIP hits far more people.

How do you take a break from doing nothing?
They sit around with their fingers up their asses and their minds in Alabama waiting until a day before their next holiday to pass something.
