Didn’t Roberts vouch for his adherence to “precedent” during his confirmation hearings? Which turned out to be total b.s., of course. I’m actually more concerned about red-state Ds up for re-election like Donnelly and Machin signing off on whatever Goresuch 2.0 nominee Trump sends to the Senate than I am Collins and Murkowski. If DT peels off several such Democrats he won’t need Collins and Murkowski.
If we’re at the point that we are going to rely on Susan Collins to protect the integrity of the Supreme Court as far as progressive values are concerned, then we might as well give up now. She thinks Gorsuch respects precedent, one week after he voted to overturn a 41 year-old precedent.
That response is so incredibly you.
Sunday morning Trump Tweeted the sum total of his philosophy of picking the next SCOTUS Justice: “You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you can’t pick my Supreme Court Justice nominee’s nose.”
Respects precedent: wink
Respects stare decisis: wink wink
Senator, is there something you’d like to tell us: wink wink wink
Senator, are you okay or should we take a break now: wink wink wink wink.
Okay, when we get back we will be sure to ask our Power Player Panel about this, and today we are honored by a return visit of Former U.S. Attorney for the State Of New Jersey, Christopher Christie is here on the panel today, and we won’t ask him on air if he’s running in 2020, but I’m sure he’ll tell us more about how the dems will follow Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Kirsten Gillibrand over the cliff like lemmings, plunging to their deaths in the deep blue sea.
Inumerable people? Some of whom actually have morals?
It took me a few seconds and then I fell off my chair.
The DEMONSTRATION of the hostility to Roe is the key to translating her weasel wording. Plenty of judges have avoided making any public statements, documented arguments or actual judicial decisions having to do with abortion–especially if they harbor any ambition to be on the Supreme Court someday.
Everyone understands that the vote to overturn will have to come from a “stealth” candidate. So no one’s talking.
Well, make up your mind …
Wow: Sen. Collins’ comments could serve as a manual for smart people in positions of power who want to make excuses. ‘I would never vote for anyone who has “demonstrated hostility” to Roe V. Wade’: meaning that the person would have had to have made an explicit statement or taken some concrete action in order to be eliminated from consideration. ‘Also, I’m sure the judge I supported would never vote against Roe V. Wade (Knowing that he almost certainly will…) because he wrote a book concerning how important precedents are! Finally, even though POTUS repeatedly said he would only nominate candidates who would oppose Roe V. Wade, he probably didn’t understand what he was saying when he was candidate and is no longer making such statements as POTUS , so it should be OK.’ She is justifying her cave in advance.
Including Collins; I agree.
Painted appropriately red, I hope.
Send them to the men as well.
They would only vote “aye” if Murkowski and Collins don’t. Our guys can “perform conservativism” for the voting audience when their votes don’t actually matter.
“The President told me in our meeting that he would not ask that question,"
He doesn’t have to ask, the Federalist Society and Heritage have already done that as a condition to putting their name on the approved list.
“I had a very long discussion with Justice Gorsuch in my office and he pointed out to me that he is a co-author of a whole book on precedent,”
A Justice not only can, but absolutely must, overturn precedent when it is clearly wrong, such as Plessy v Ferguson. I don’t think Gorsuch or any other hard right social conservative Justice will have any problem explaining the serious Constitutional and logical argument errors in Roe v Wade that compel its reversal.
But then this is the same Susan Collins who voted for the tax giveaway act because McConnell promised her a vote on ACA alternatives. Slow learner, that one.
Nah mang it’s a Hitler joke. Sometimes my restraint and good taste fail me.
The counter-argument I’ve seen advanced is that we’re not electing a president this year.
I’m sure I don’t need to spell out how lousy a “counter-argument” this is.
went right over my head. I think I better make some more coffee.
I mean maybe it’s just me but to just me absurd overuse of the YKWE meme turns it inside out and makes it funny again.
May I ask: When did you?
(Serious question, partly because I have no idea how old you are.)
