Discussion: Colbert: Hillary Clinton's Plan For Spontaneity Is Full Of Irony (VIDEO)

I’m a NYer …your take on Schumer is actually too generous…he’s a photo op.

It is Amy Schumer that Colbert had on, so that means there’s two Schumers I’m not fans of. IMO Schumer’s going to be shut out of becoming Senate Majority Leader because of his treachery towards the president. P.S. I was raised in NY and I voted for Robert F. Kennedy for Senator just before I left for California.

Ohhhhh, haha.

Indeed, I am bewildered by the fascination with Amy Schumer. Her comedy seems more aimed at teenagers though, so I guess that’s OK. But I do not find her funny at all.

I really can’t fathom that you never watched The Colbert Report. His whole thing has been exposing hypocrisy and stupidity – no matter where it comes from. Its ironic that HRC snubbed him to gain what she hoped would be a more sympathetic interview, and the result is she still receives the Colbert treatment and is not even there to retort. That’s her campaign’s obtuse strategy at work again – she missed a fantastic opportunity to engage with the public and to change the negative narrative that is only growing worse. If her campaign isn’t going to wake up on their own, Colbert’s alarm is going to continue to blast at her.

We can only hope, matter of fact called my two Senators to express my thoughts,Booker and Menendez
IMO Booker may listen although he was screaming and crying with his vote,Menendez has other fish to fry, trying not become said fish.

I finally got around to watching Game Change last night, and I finally realized one of the things that happened then.

The GOP stratagists had been so busy for the previous 3 decades spinning their yarns, that it never really dawned on them that the people that they had been targeting were really dumb, and eventually some of them would bubble up as politicians. Palin was that reality staring them square in the face…and they were truly stunned by the level of incompetence, stupidity and pettiness that they had wrought.

And each election cycle for the GOP just seems to turn them further and further down the nuthouse road. I suspect there are people working on various GOP campaigns right now who would watch that movie and go…“Man, I so wish I had someone that reasonable to work with now!”

Her humor can be kind of prurient and immature – but I see flashes of real brilliance. I absolutely loved this segment from her show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPpsI8mWKmg

Newest Clinton Rule:

Try to refrain from printing[1], showing or publicizing any news that advantages Hillary Clinton. At the very least diminish any such advantage.

Chris Hayes talked about this last night, about half way through the show in a 30 second bit in between commercials. But it doesn’t seem to have been widely circulated and given notoriety; because talking about Trump’s latest insults is sooo much more important.

I did too, but look at who she had doing all the heavy lifting on that bit.

I also felt the Schumer interview was awkward & focusing so much on them hobnobbing with celebrities and the anal text? Uh TMI. I expected some reference to her cousin even if they didn’t want to get too political and bring up her comments about gun control. The other eh moment, though I didn’t see every part of each show, was the Scarlet Johanson question bit.

Nice Steven but is not going to work. There was a time that some people thought that Rush Limbaugh could swing an election for a conservative candidate. That failed. There were times that some thought Rush could swing a primary process toward one candidate. That did not work either. Now MSNBC, and seemingly you, think that you can bring into the primary a man that clearly is mourning and not ready to play in the hopes that if HRC implodes he will be there to pick up the pieces. This is how this works folks; Biden, a man I highly respect and like, will not have better approval ratings that he has now. Never. Ever. And he know that. Once he jumps in the ring, if he does at all, he will nose dive. There is very little light, is any, between HRC and Joe Biden. I see the rationale for a Sanders run. I just don’t see what Biden brings unless his whole reason for election is “I am a better Hillary”. The weird “progressive wing” of the Democratic party better grow up soon, or the party will end up running a candidate worst than George McGovern in November 2016. At least McGovern was not a self declared socialist for the love of Pete! And we have all seen how that movie ended up!

There is something to the notion that Hillary is too scripted when she speaks, but I’m reminded of the over-the-top complaints of Obama not being able to deliver a speech without a teleprompter. Those remarks were made divisively and persisted throughout his campaign and well into his Presidency. On the other hand, I also recall how often Obama has been credited for being amongst one of the best orators of our times, with his ability to deliver a cogent and heartfelt message for our times to a public yearning to hear simple truths. Both of these things can exist simultaneously I might add…Obama possesses that special quality of authenticity imo.

Planned spontaneity is indeed an oxymoron and the irony is obvious, but winging it isn’t always in a candidate’s best interest. Thus the conundrum for Hillary.

Someone here said it best a couple of days ago. The complaint was over a Hillary campaign ad, that talked about “everyday Americans”. The problem was that the “opulent background” in the ad seriously detracted from her message. This is the kind of stuff I tend to notice too. It did seem way off the mark. I hate to be one to talk about “the optics” but that one really sucked, and not for anything she said, but for how dissonant it was from her message.

I expect Hillary to get better and learn from her mistakes, or if you prefer, her shortcomings. I haven’t written her off by any means…but she does need to up her game and if that means going off-script…I’m all for it. She just needs to be prepared because honestly, the media has it out for her for reasons that go beyond anything to do with what she says or does on the campaign trail…and that’s the most annoying thing of all because its rightwing bullshit and some in the media that have made their careers going after the Clintons in general.

She does have flashes and I can see people loving her for being kickass but a little bit of her goes a long way for me. Like her “12 Angry Men” segment was a great concept but after a while it just got tedious and was just a tad crude.

It will receive zero coverage from CNN or Fox. And Hayes’ mention will probably be the only its discussed on MSNBC.

The NYT send out a “political alert” yesterday…about a long opinion piece on why it took Hillary so long to apologize, filled with anonymous sources, “some people close to the campaign” and only 3 actual quotes, all of which directly contradicted the aim of the article.

The Quin Poll that showed Bernie leading Hillary in Iowa got lots of coverage, but the PPP poll from the day before that showed Hillary beating the crap out of Bernie in SC received no coverage anywhere.

That seems to be her M.O. She was a much better candidate at the end of 2008 then she was heading into Iowa, with a lot of the same criticisms we see today being echoed back then.

It is up to the people surrounding Hillary to devise a Plan (which will account for the very true things you point out). The HorseRace is On. There is NO WAY the MSM will let that Cash Cow go by the wayside.

Even if the G.O.P. nominates Jared of “Subway”, the MSM will make G.O.P. and Dem shortcomings “equivalent”

It’s going to be a tough sell, to persuade Democratic voters who will have extremes at both ends (Perfect-The-Enemy-Of-The-Good on the one hand and Asleep People on the other), while also trying to persuade “Independents” and “Undecideds” (who may vote based on a pantsuit colour).

She especially is going to have to rely on individuals who know people at the Macro Level.

I was thinking about this film last night but mostly about Moore’s brilliant performance. It’s tough not to wander into parody territory when Plain is the subject, but Moore kept it dignified while exposing the inner opportunist that is Plain. It’s available on amazon streaming, so that may be tonight’s programming.

But you can blame Billy Kristol and his cohort for finding the governor in Alaska when they went on a cruise and believed they’d found a cross between “Joan of Arc” and “Annie Oakley” and that is their description of her. That’s how they sold her to the flagging McCain campaign.

Which tells you everything you need to know about how manipulative the media is when it comes to Hillary Clinton. They’ll go on and on attempting to drive down her poll numbers with false reports that lead them to declare, “polling now says she’s distrustful and lies”.

When they have a story that explicitly says she did nothing illegal, wrong or unusual in her job as SoS…its barely covered if at all. If it exonerates Hillary in any way they just ignore it. That’s why she needs to come out swinging against the media…but I suspect she won’t until the hearings into the bullshit faux email controversy is over.

The rightwing attempts to drag this all the way from the Benghazi bullshit into campaign season has never been accidental. That’s been the plan all along. That’s intentional. Since Benghazi by itself, holds no emotional or lasting impression or outrage 4 years later, this is the Republicans’ next ploy. It is sickening how the media is employed or lobbied to go along with this and willingly accepts the narrative Republicans want to tell.

Added: Btw, it would be nice if TPM covered the release of the DoJ report on its own front page as a serious development in the ongoing saga of the bullshit email ‘scandal’. The importance of this newest report would not go unnoticed, and would go a long way to help debunk much of the bullshit out there.

I also watched Idiocracy right after. I makes for some interesting thinking

One thing that they really didn’t touch on, which was a major reason for Krisol and the others to get behind Palin, probably because it was too coarse for even Halprin, was the reason those men got behind her was because they were all getting hard ons staring at her. They were fine with her not being vetted or not having enough sense to get in out of the rain…because she was hot, and she regurgitated right wing talking points. Everyone of them went there in their minds.

I will toss this out there too, which is off subject, but something I was pondering yesterday.

If Castro had thrown his hat into the race, he would be skyrocketing in the polls right now. With Trump and the GOP demonizing Hispanics, with Hillary starting to drop, with the Dem Powers That Be getting skittish…a young, sharp, Hispanic candidate well received by the party would be painted as the new Savior. Biden’s name wouldn’t even be floated.

I agree that neither Sanders or Biden are ideal candidates or sure fire winners – but your feeling that Hillary unopposed would be a winner is also wrong. The only reason I and many other people are looking elsewhere is lack of confidence that she can win the general. I will not only vote for her if she is our nominee – I will work my ass off for her because our lives and well-being depend on democrats holding the White House. In the meantime, I think she had better improve drastically as a candidate or we are cooked.
