Discussion for article #242698
We had better call the RWNJs a waaaaaaaaaambulance before they have a heart attack about Hillary Clinton endorsing strangulation of her opponents.
Cue conservative freakout and beltway stenographer false equivalence in 3…2…1…
BY ENTHUSIAsticalLY Endorsing the STRANGLE MURder Of CARLY Fiorina, Misogynist IN A PANtSUIT HITLARY is basically LIKE Albert DeSalvo. BUT IN a PANtsuit. I’m FREAKEd out.
yeah no not cool, if trump laughed off one of his supporters saying this about hillary we’d be disgusted
It’d have been better if TPM would have put up the entire transcript of what the man was saying prior to saying he’d like to strangle her.
Anyone would have understood why then.
not rly tho
HITLARY HAD Vince foster CAPPed. WHO doesN"t think SHE"LL choke OUT CarlY?
Agreed in concept, but my overall view is that what she did (laugh) is fine, and a lot of what conservatives have said in similar context that many liberals get outraged over is fine. This over sensitivity stuff is just out of control sometimes.
Yes, if this guy said “I’d like to strangle the bitch”, that’s a problem. But he said he’d like to reach into the TV set and strangle her, clearly not feasible and more figurative. In fact if he said he’d like to shoot the TV, that’s fine too. But if he said “shoot her”, of course not cool.
Ruh-Ro!
And so the false equivalence begins…
Here’s the difference. If you notice, she laughs at his comment, engages, and doesn’t even pretend to be taking him seriously.
In “similar” exchanges between conservative voters and Fiorina, Trump, and (I think) Cruz they invariably do not respond directly, do not really engage, and move on quickly - so that they can pretend they didn’t hear it later.
Caribou Barbie and Lyin’ Ryan usually did it the “conservative way” as well.
Gramps McCain is the only one who has ever pushed back I can recall, and that has served mostly as a cautionary example for other conservatives; do this if you want to lose your base.
Once he said he worked for HP no other background was necessary.
(sigh!) Another year of triviasunami…
Exactly. The guy was speaking figuratively. Nothing more. There are still going to be those that think she should have somehow scolded the man or corrected him for that kind of speech. I don’t see it that way. He was clearly talking about his frustration getting laid off, after having worked for that cold-hearted bitch at HP. It was a totally appropriate sentiment imo. Nothing indicates he was going to literally do anything of the sort.
The media never, ever allowed anyone to get away with things like they allow Hillary to get away with things.
If you listen to what the man says, he explains his relationship with HP and Fiorina. He very calmly explains what Fiorina did at the company which cost thousands of people their jobs (which they were good at, as he explains).
When someone says they want to reach through the television screen and strangle somebody, few people take such claims literally. I certainly didn’t take this man’s claim that way.
What’s Hillary supposed to say–“Please don’t encourage people to reach through their television screens and strangle other people”???
He dislikes her lying about events which cost thousands of people their jobs. She’s saying she was an effective leader at HP because she cut out waste and made the business more profitable. He had a different story to tell that many people are all too familiar with.
I don’t see this story gaining traction, but pathological Clinton hatred doesn’t need much of a spark to explode into a wildfire. TPM has a history of trying to fan these flames, dating back to 2008 when it comes to Hillary.
Hillary/Carly cage match! Choking allowed! All-new presidential debate sponsored by ESPN!
Carly looks like a biter.
Looking forward to Steve Doocy spending an entire morning trying to prove it’s actually possible to put his hands through a TV screen.
Well, they did include the video clip - which provides even more information. While it may sound callous or disturbing that she laughed in writing, in the clip the entire audience laughs because the man delivered the quip in humorous fashion. It was clear that he was simply expressing frustration rather than literally saying that he wanted to physically strangle her. And of course saying “I wanted to strangle [someone]” is a common term of frustration that is not typically a threat of actual physical violence.
