Discussion: Clinton Says Stopping Lone Wolves A 'Top Priority' After Orlando Shooting

So why bother trying to do anything? Is that what you’re saying? Or do you feel that we just deserve it? What exact do you see as a solution? Or if not a solution, a policy, law, or action that would help?

@steviedee111

You’re describing a dystopia I don’t care to live in.

So what do you think we should do? From what you say, terrorism is going to win anyway, so why even bother with regulation or borders or surveillance or any of that. In fact, from what you say, terrorism has already effectively won.

Taggant technology mandated for all explosives or explosive precursors. Congress will NEVER do it, the NRA has spoken on the matter.

Stricter gun control. Congress will never do it, the NRA has spoken.

Vastly expanded and improved comprehensive mental health facilities and practitioners, paid for by a national health insurance system, with doctors able to somehow bring to the attention of authorities the most demnted and dangerous persons with no fear of HIPAA violations, yet similar protections for the patients. Criminal pursuits downplayed or eliminated in favor of intervention by neutral caregivers. Otherwise people wouldn’t seek help, nor would relatives and friends refer or encourage them to do so. Probably unworkable, and doomed to be voted down in Congress if some form of it was introduced.

Some sort of criminal sanction or penalty for the most aggregious forms of inciting violence or otherwise advocating and facilitating a mindset and communications baldly intended to foment violent acts. At least conviction for such speech would place a person more firmly in the criminal justice tracking system. Probably won’t happen, would infringe on the 1st Amendment and be open to far too much interpretation and abuse unless crafted very carefully and with a foresight and intelligence not found in Congress.

Vastly expanded numbers of FBI agents, enabling an expansion of monitoring of those people investigated but turned loose for lack of evidence of terroristic intents. Often where there is smoke there’s fire, but all we do now is put out the fires. We eventually are forced to ignore all the smoke for the inability to track it all in perpetuity

Well, you’re in it, like it or not.

Thanks.

You know, its probably worth mentioning that the notion that individuals have a constitutional right to guns has only be backed up by the Courts for 14 years. Well over 2 centuries of jurisprudence held that the 2nd Amendment is a collective right of the states to have state militias.

But even more importantly, both Emerson and Heller held that even if there is such a right, the government most certainly can still regulate gun ownership…including what sort of guns can be owned, under what conditions, and what restrictions.

There is zero legal precedent that I know of, that says people can own any type of gun they want, period.

This isn’t a snide response, but basically, in your opinion, we’re fucked.

Well…happy Monday to you too.

Well your personal nihilistic opinion is thankfully not the reality we live in. I can respect, and to some extent share your cynicism and skepticism. But I reject your defeatism.

Seconded. I haven’t heard/read her speech, but I’d like her to be making the argument that, while we can never catch every “lone wolf” and live in anything like a free society, we can do much more to find more of them, and especially to make sure that, when they do fall through the cracks, they can’t do remotely as much damage as this sick fker did. That means, first and foremost, making sure weapons of war, and the attachments that turn more ordinary firearms into weapons of war, are not readily available. Period. Want to practice with such stuff? Go to a firing range and rent your AR-15, your extra-capacity clip. If this sick fk hadn’t been able to get a gun that should only be in a combat zone, there would at least have been far fewer families in mourning today.

Here is the link to the full video (thanks to @littlegirlblue) with the start point when her speech starts.

Thanks; I’ll definitely watch it later when I have time.

EDIT: Well, I finally worked my way to the early story today about Clinton’s interview on gun policy. Of course, she beat me to it (even the “weapons of war” label!). Shoulda known she’d be on top of it; hallelujah.

Which is why more vigorous laws and enforcement about straw purchases be put in place. Stop digging.

Fortunately I can step out of the dystopia you think I live in. You’re stuck in it.

I haven’t seen any mention of Sanders’ response. Is the media conspiring to keep him out of the picture, again?

He seems to have made a statement in VT (I saw it floating in my Twitter feed, and I guess it made a short mention on TV news), but it does feel like everyone else is moving on but him and his dead enders.
