There must be an attack on the Donald every day…Make Trump tweet something stupid…
They have enough material to produce one or two of these a day for the rest of the campaign. Very effective. I’m sure there will be ones about his bankruptcies as well.
It will be interesting to see how Trump responds. Most likely he’ll just dig a deeper hole for himself.
The bad news is that the Republican Party will now almost certainly nominate the most dangerous presidential nominee in modern American history. The good news is that the Democratic Party is built to defeat him. The reason is straightforward. The Democratic Party has become, to a significant extent, an anti-racist party. The Republican Party has not.
@azjude It’s a pleasing though to picture R pols particularly the vulnerable ones, Kirk, Portman, etc., running away from an ad than runs every day.
@mattinpa We talk a lot about ads writing themselves, and here’s what it looks like.
Run that on every network daily!
God knows they had plenty to work with, but these are beautifully done, and just brutal. Not everyone has the taste and insight needed to distinguish really good video production from the just-OK or cringeworthily lame variety. Someone on her team does, though. Call me an optimist, since I am one, but I think this augurs well.
ETA: Just watched again and remembered I was laughing with a friend last night about Jeb’s comment at the end. “He’s got—(head shake)—he needs, he needs therapy.” OMFG it’s priceless and perfect. For maybe the first and only time in his life, Jeb comes off like a normal person who’s saying something he really believes, and with this ad he may end up striking a harder blow at Donald than anyone ever could have imagined, himself included. Just brutal.
The beauty of it, if Drumpf attacks it, he is attacking Republicans.
I’m normally unimpressed by Democratic messaging, but this is fucking spot-on and a great piece of work. I hope this is a portent of things to come.
I also hope they do one highlighting his creepy “Dad lusting after his daughter” comments. And one specifically focusing on his mocking the NYT reporter’s physical disability too. And one mocking McCain for being a POW.
And one highlighting the 121 members of the Republican national security community who have openly condemned Trump as dangerous:
And one highlighting his “the blacks love me” assertion juxtaposed with all the Klan and white supremacist endorsements.
And one highlighting the universe-sized difference between Trump and previous Presidents:
“I beg you be persuaded that no one would be more zealous than myself
to establish effectual barriers against the horrors of spiritual
tyranny, and every species of religious persecution.”
— George Washington
As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master.
This expresses my idea of democracy. Whatever differs from this,
to the extent of the difference, is no democracy." — Abraham Lincoln
“Here is your country. Cherish these natural wonders, cherish the natural
resources, cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for
your children and your children’s children. Do not let selfish men or
greedy interests skin your country of its beauty, its riches or its
romance.” ― Theodore Roosevelt
“The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerated the
growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than
the democratic state itself." ― Franklin D. Roosevelt
“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired
signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are
not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.” ― Dwight D. Eisenhower
“If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the
world safe for diversity. For, in the final analysis, our most basic
common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe
the same air. We all cherish our children’s future. And we are all mortal."
— John F. Kennedy
“I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody
and I wouldn’t lose any voters, OK? It’s, like, incredible.” — Donald J. Trump
Has anyone paid Christie’s ransom yet?
I think you’re spot on with that assessment. In some ways, it reminds me of the quality ads that Pres. Obama’s team used against Mittens in '12. Usually very good, to the point and memorable.
I was going to, but I bought beer and pretzels instead.
I thought we didn’t negotiate with terrorists (well, except when Reagan sold arms to Iran to get hostages released).
Nah, I’m pretty sure he had it coming to him.
And the only bright spot of Ms. Fiorina’s campaign was the “I think women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said” line. Easy ad.
Mix in some average folks, known non-political faces, military and fresh news cycle SOTs and this basic spot format can run fresh daily…
Im sure they have hours worth of clips and footage (Howard Stern interviews) to use in ads like this. The trick will be not to overkill and make the Trump crazy racism and misogyny white noise with overuse over 6 months. Don’t want the voters to become numb to it by October. Part of Trump’s technique is he says things that would kill any other candidate, but he says so many of them all the time that any one item just gets lost in the flood (Cruz father killing JFK) and just gets washed out in the torrent.
My biggest fear is that the media desperately needs a horserace financially, and attempts to normalize (or distract from) Trumps most indefinisible traits.
I will add, that this ad is a perfect example of why you don’t go negative against your own team’s candidates in primaries. I hope our side learns from this.
I don’t mind them keeping some gunpowder dry until after he’s nominated, but then it’s hit him hard, hit him often.
I hear ya. But the level of crazy and the often salacious nature of a lot of this will be a counterweight to the loss of the “horse race” aspect of it when it comes to eyeballs and clicks.
