Discussion: Clinton Campaign: Computer Service Used By Campaign Was Hacked

I think it’s pretty clear we can eliminate the Republicans from suspicion. They have absolutely no history of this kind of activity.

Guess what Donald? It seems the Russians were listening! They must have missed the sarcasm.

Two dodobirds on TPM’s twitter blaming HRC. Apparently not only is she a highly qualified pol, she’s also now an IT specialist who sys admins her own networks and those of the DNC. Lord save me from idiots

  1. Realistically, this only makes the Dems look like idiots. (Maybe they are?? This is 2016, there are droves of competent IT people out there — hire one, for chrissake.) Remember when various types were lecturing us about how competence/adults-in-the-room was going to be the thrilling theme of the campaign? Like, last week.

  2. Whoever did this has committed a major crime. It’s the equivalent of wheeling a truck up to the Dem Headquarters and carting off all their stuff. Will someone be prosecuted or at least, if off-shore, suffer some consequences?

You think the GOP computers are proof against hacking by the Russian state security agencies? Give me a break.
If they DID have any security it would be trivial to beat it was some porno phishing.

This is getting weird. I’m starting to wonder if the Russian government isn’t also playing a role in the constant barrage of anti-Clinton rhetoric we see in the social media. Has the flood of anti-Clinton Facebook posts from the Sanders supporters really all come from the Sanders campaign? After all, they didn’t really stop even after Sanders conceded and backed Clinton.

Is it possible the Russians got ahold of the email list for the Sanders campaign and are doing all they can to “keep the campaign alive?” What about the mods in r/politics on Reddit? Social media sites like Reddit have totally anonymous mods and contributors. How hard would it be for a foreign government to infiltrate such sites in an organized attempt to influence opinions if they wanted? After all, if they’re willing to hack the Democrats to steal emails and other information and use WikiLeaks, I can see them doing this as well.

Please provide us with an example of a Federal agency or major corporation whose IT systems have never been compromised. That, by the way, is the underlying joke regarding Clinton’s Chappaqua mail server - it was probably considerably more secure than the State Department mail servers.

Given the Russians’ well-documented history of dispatching large numbers of online trolls to defend Putin (go back and look at what happened when Russia seized the Crimea), it wouldn’t surprise me a bit to see them using a similar tactic now.

Trump! Make America More Easily Bamboozled Again!

It is really creepy. One thing we can be sure of though–Trump’s deeply patriotic America-firsters are going to be cheering on their Russian heroes.

I wouldn’t put it past Trump to claim credit for instigating the hack, “sarcastically”, of course.

If it’s off shore they’ll probably receive an apology.

Oh, I think that this is very likely, but you don’t have to pull in “the Russians”. This is something that the GOP stated they were going to do. It is also something that PR firms do all the time. Not the hacking, mind you, just the postings into forums, planting of Op-Eds / “letters,” etc.

Good point. Paid trolls are a fact of life these days, though if any of our own resident trolls are being paid, someone’s not getting value for money.

After everything “email” with Hillary, I hope they are at least learning not to put anything damaging / stupid in an email.

I tell my kid’s if you put something in an email, assume it may be read by someone other than the intended recipient, either by someone forwarding it on, or it getting hacked.

Right, who had the old New York Times rule? Never say something in an email that you wouldn’t be comfortable having on the front page of the New York Times.

Yeah, but the Russians, unlike the GOP, might have gotten ahold of the contact list for the Sanders campaign. If so, they could have flooded all of the Sanders supporters with anti-Clinton propaganda that appeared to be coming from other “concerned” Sanders supporters.

The reason I’m saying this is that the pro Sanders anti Clinton movement didn’t stop even after Sanders conceded and seemed a bit too organized for a leaderless movement.
