Discussion: Clinton: Calls To Delay SCOTUS Nomination 'Dishonor Our Constitution'

Republicans don’t mind looking like idiots to get their job done.

In NJ, a bill requiring police to be notified if a gun applicant had their mental health block lifted passed the legislature unanimously, but could not overcome Christie’s veto because the GOP wouldn’t support the bill they’d already voted for.

And the US Congress’ GOP is even more partisan.

I don’t see any positives in this situation for the GOP at all.

They’re totally fucked and this is the only cards they have to play, and even if they get their wish it will cost them dearly in November. I can honestly say now that this may be the beginning of the end of Republican idiocy.

A modest proposal: Sen. Sanders for SCOTUS. Clearly a caretaker choice, but from there he would have an even more effective platform for his ideas than as POTUS, without the downside of being distracted by all the other stuff he doesn’t really care about.

You mean 2024 elections…

Heh. Maybe I should say, “They shouldn’t be allowed to …”

As Universe as my witness, I hope this event will help make it clear to the average person how very important it is to vote. I suspect a lot more shit over the next few months – an I hope the idle and sleeping will be shaken into understanding just what is at stake.

I think it’s in their platform to at least try.

Hmmm … an interesting suggestion.

My thought exactly. Now SCOTUS is no longer an abstract, long-distance question in voters’ check list. It is here, now, in the rawest form imaginable.

Terrible idea. We need to be smart like the Republican snakes on this one-- the younger the nominee, the better. If we could nominate an 18-year-old and be sure of his/her reliability as a liberal vote, that’s something that would last for decades.

At this point in history, you DON’T nominate someone in their latter years for a lifetime appointment.

“The Senate has a constitutional responsibility here that it cannot abdicate for partisan political reasons.”

Exactly. This an easy one for the media. Sure, the GOP can whine and moan about it, but delay until the election or even this summer and they’re simply refusing to govern and the media should report it like that. If so, welcome to a Democratic president and very likely a slim Democratic majority in the Senate. I’m sure the GOP would love to have a supreme court justice nominated then.

I can–and do–agree regarding the age. However, you’re really responding to @BikerDad’s suggestion.

I agree Hillary!

How 'bout nominating a black female jurist and then just leaving it out there for the election cycle. But she can’t be wearing no hijab. Then would be over the line. Worth a laugh anyway.

NY Times:

The Traditional Values Coalition, one of many groups opposed to same-sex marriage and abortion, quickly sent out an email declaring that it “will be aggressively ensuring that the United States Senate fulfills its constitutional role to prevent any radical or liberal appointment to the bench.”

You know, I’ve read through the US Constitution several times and, for the life of me, I can’t remember any article or amendment to the Constitution that requires the Senate to prevent any liberal appointment to the bench.

It would be surprising if there were such an article because, contrary to the apparent beliefs of the Traditional Values Coalition, most of our founding fathers considered themselves liberals.
