Discussion: CIA Director: Trump Should Be 'Very Very Careful' About Lifting Russia Sanctions

Trump’s a few bricks shy of a full appreciation! I love this Brennan guy, he’s a hoot.

If Trump unilaterally lifts the sanctions against Russia, without anything in return, he will show himself to be a lousy negotiator and will lend further suspicion to his ties with Putin/Russia. He prides himself in being worthy as a negotiator. He is, alas, a “fake.”

“I think he has to be mindful”

A bridge too far.

This is why you don’t hire a huckster to do your brain surgery or to launch a manned space venture.

Russian sanctions

The idea of lifting sanctions is that you get something in return. I am sure Trump would just love one of those Fabergé eggs made for Tsar Alexander.

Can Trump lift sanctions without it being an act of Congress to help him do so? Either I knew and I forgot, or I never really understood what-all is involved.

Might as well as ask a meat cutter to perform brain surgery.

And here’s the problem in a nutshell - much of the future course of our country is dependent on Trump having an awareness, understanding, and appreciation of facts and reality and the real consequences of his decisions and actions - something he is not capable of or even interested in.

Too bad all he’ll get is a souvenir Russian nesting doll as a token.

Putin has done so much that is contrary to American interests and values, and so many have risked their lives to gather the Intel. It is catastrophic that some idiot masquerading as President can and may very well change the course of history in such a profoundly bad way.

We’re all going to get to feel like the Lemony Snicket kids for however long Trump lasts. What’s ours will be kept from us, and no one will believe us that the current guardian is really the evil Count Olaf.

brennan underscores the real issue…that the pretender does NOT have a clue as to what is going on in the world or even in the country.
his only motivation being personal gain.

if compromised by russian spooks we would certainly expect to see the sanctions removed early since how could anyone then argue removal would be the results of " working together"…since that implies time.

He can kick the Ukraine sanctions, but he would be asking for it.

On his own? That’s fucked.

from that Vox article

If Trump wants to give Putin a gift, the Ukraine-related sanctions are the lowest-hanging fruit. He can sign executive orders that get rid of them and doesn’t have to worry about presenting evidence to Congress.

Still, the new president might want to think twice before doing so.

Democratic and Republican Russia hawks would be sure to argue that lifting the sanctions without getting Putin to make any concessions on Ukraine would tacitly endorse Russia’s expansionism and deal a huge blow to the credibility of sanctions as a diplomatic tool.

“Lifting the sanctions without any kind of results from the Russians makes the whole purpose of sanctions moot,” Fiona Hill, director of the Center on the United States and Europe at the Brookings Institution, says. “Absent any change on the ground, all that would underscore to the Russians is that this is all a game … and has nothing to do with behavior.”

Yup.

Either those or the ‘ill gotten gains’ paperwork that was issued in Dec, (?) could be taken out with lil or no commotion.

Well there was this group of folks who wanted Bernie to run against Trump.

Folks are still trying to find out, how much of an impact did the Sanders bloc have on this election.

And DJT’s beef with the Iran deal was, cryptically, “We did get anything in return!!” Or something. In any case, for “Art of the Deal” Don to simply lift sanctions on Russia would be…telling.

And how many of the Sanders bloc on line were Putin trolls jumping on to the “It’s rigged!!” bus.

that’s still on the table.

Btw, Cory Gardner is under the impression that Trump is going to tear that deal up.
