Discussion: Chicago Council Passes Resolution Welcoming Syrians In Rebuke Of Guv

Discussion for article #242988

Proud of my old hometown (where I visited this past weekend for the first time in 24 years, to attend my son’s graduation from Navy basic) for this.

“It cannot be in this moment when those in France have the courage to commit themselves to their values that we are weakened and walk away,” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said,

I couldn’t have said it any better. Republicans actually make me wonder what Christian values are. I had thought it was to take care of and aid the dispossessed, the poor and the suffering; regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, etc. Frankly, I would be ashamed if I were one of those 23 governors. The federal government has set up the most exhaustive verification process possible for the Syrians and it’s ignorant to suggest otherwise.

May many more mayors and other governors too pass such ''symbolic" resolutions to counter the craven “symbolic” refusenik statements of certain governors and Congressional blowfish. People follow or cower from symbols; let’s make this one a rally flag across the USA!

Congratulations to your son (and you too!).

An excellent demonstration against the goal of this terrorism… to force us to change our basic values. Go Rahm!

That’s not just a Christian value; the sacred obligation to provide shelter, safety and sustenance to anyone (uninvited strangers too) showing up at your door is a very old societal value that crosses cultures (perhaps universally so). To break this reciprocal bond of hospitality was tabu, and God or the gods inevitably and severely punished such evildoers. Sometimes such punishment included other family members for generations! (Review Greek and Biblical mythology thru this tabu: Warning - The punitive severity you experience varys based on the God/gods you must obey!)

Thank you.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton has issued a proclamation welcoming refugees and denouncing Arizona Gov. Ducey’s shameful ban on refugees.

Phoenix has been welcoming Somali refugees - nearly all Muslims - for many years. I believe there are also a fair number of Bosnian Muslim refugees who were resettled in Phoenix.
