Discussion: Charlotte Police To Release Footage Of Keith Lamont Scott Shooting

Why don’t I believe a word this police capt. says? Why do I believe he and his murderers planted a gun next to this innocent man they murdered?

Even if I believed him, how does being in possession of a handgun become a capital offense without judge or jury? Also, where’s the NRA in this? (Both of those are clearly rhetorical, I know the answer for both is “He was black.”)

Putney said that Scott was “absolutely in possession of a handgun,” and that officers also saw marijuana in his car — prompting officers to act.

Not actually possible, BTW.

I wouldn’t hold my breath on this. You see, 3 months ago, notoriously conservative NC Gov, Pat McCrory and the extremist NC legislature passed a law prohibiting law enforcement from releasing video without a court order - A court order obtained by a victim’s next of kin I am not aware that the victim’s family has petitioned any court for such an order.

HB 972 declares that police videos are not public record and can only be viewed by a person in the video (they can’t copy it or record it. If they want to do that, they have to get a judge’s
order. If the person is deceased, only a member of their family can petition a judge to release the video. (http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/Sessions/2015/Bills/House/HTML/H972v7.html)

According to Gov McCrory this was supposed to be better. It was supposed to increase transparency. It was supposed to protect people’s privacy. We see now, just three months later just what the intention of the law is: it allows law enforcement to front a narrative that is favorable to them. After days of rioting, we can see just how well this has worked out, can’t we?

In fact, as a result of this law many local law enforcement agencies around the state have simply stopped using dashboard and body cams because of the requirements imposed because of this law. Nice transparency there.

So while the Police may have the intention to release the video without a court order, I suspect that some government attorney will tell them they can’t or, if they do, they will be breaking the law. Do I think the NC legislature will ram through a fix to this law in the next day or so? No.

That’s why the cops now “saw marijuana” because being in possession of a firearm while in possession of illegal drugs is a felony regardless of open carry laws.

Every article I’ve read says that law doesn’t go into effect until, Oct 1st, I believe it is. It’s supposedly not in effect at the moment.

How about a little creative editing to go along with it? Although in this case it has at least been shown to the family already.

The wife kept telling the man, ‘don’t do it,’ Called out his name and said again ‘don’t do it.’

Don’t do WHAT?
