Discussion: CBO Lays Down Key Ground Rules For Scoring Obamacare Replacement Plans

I drove a Corvair once. If only Ralph Nader had stuck to his strengths.

Serious question here: Who/What gives the CBO such power over Congress that it can dictate the content of legislation?

I mean, it’s nice that the CBO will attempt to protect millions from being screwed, but I’m not sure I understand the process here.

if the Republican replacements include actual ā€˜death panels’ will they score that as an equivalence or an equivocation?

There is no conservative replacement for ObamaCare because ObamaCare is the conservative approach. A liberal approach would be Medicare for all.

…which was an approach that many allegedly ā€œliberalā€ Democrats in Congress back in 2009/2010 refused to support.

Also they had six years to look at
seven replacement plans.

They gotta pick one now,

the CBO is supposed to be a non-partisan office that quantifies fiscal impacts of legislation… to do that they have to try to set ground rules that will attempt to be apple to apple measurements when comparing a new superseding piece of legislation to what it’s replacing…

the House/Senate can still say ā€˜fuck you we ain’t doing’ that but then they can’t claim equivalence…

They are not dictating legislation but laying out the standards by which it will be judged and its costs assessed.

Basically the office is throwing down the gauntlet and saying you don’t get to substitute a steak with a peanut and call it the same just because they both contain protein.

So, to be considered medical insurance coverage, it actually has to provide a reasonable amount of monetary coverage to insure against loss caused by expected or foreseeable illness or injury? What a novel idea.

ā€œsome of those insurance products would probably not provide enough financial protection against high medical costsā€

No shit, Sherlock. Feature not a bug. Is it me or is there some unwritten rule I’m totally unaware of that prevents our systems and agencies and MSM and what have you from explicitly acknowledging the fact that the people who refuse to accept evolutionary science are trying to use the gov’t to impose the harshest version of social darwinism they can manage on the poors and minorities?

And again, stop fucking pretending they mean it when they say they’ll replace it. Grow up and grow a pair.

A Corvair once drove me, …into bankruptcy.

They absolutely will create a plan and call it a replacement. It will be crap, and they will try to blame Democrats for taking away health insurance coverage if the Dems are able to block the plan.

This is like the Pure Food and Drugs Act which said you can’t sell poison to people and call it food or drugs. Stuff you sell has to be what you claim it is. If I ran things it would be a capital offense to approach this as a controversial thing against which you could plausibly argue. Perhaps we will see that happy day arrive if a certain party keeps pushing its luck. I’m feeling less scrupulous or fussy about the idea with every passing day.

I do not think anyone expects GOP to come up with a viable replacement. But I’m sure the GOP will try to hide the lack of replacement and argue that the number of uninsured either remains steady or decreases after the repeal of ACA. CBO just made it easier for everyone to see that the emperor will have no clothes.

Of course, I also have no doubt that GOP political appointees will try to pressure and/or fire career public servants who will insist on doing their jobs properly.

I was almost killed in one when driving my boyfriend’s car with him. Coming off a hill, I came around a curve a bit too fast and the darn thing went up on two wheels.

Don’t know why I had the presence of mind to take my foot off the gas and not hit the brake. I was 17 at the time.

Did you check the election results lately?

And because what the CBO just said about the Obamacare replacement strongly suggests that Ryan’s Medicare-killing plan for insuring the elderly will be judged in the same way. Ryan was hoping to ride his zombified Medicare plan into the White House.

That’s why GOP is considering 2 or 4 year delay in the implementation.
For some reason GOP did not hear enough in defense of ACA from many people relying on it during the past 6 years nor during the recent elections.
