This is the cabinet department that affects my professional life and if there was one thing I figured Trump, a real estate developer, could do, is find a reasonably competent person for HUD. In 20-20 hindsight, I was delusional.
The position sets up perfectly for an ambitious, youngish, politico from the state/local ranks - think Henry Cisneros, Mayor of San Antonio became HUD Secty at 46 years old; Andrew Cuomo was appointed to an Assistant Secty at HUD when he was 36 and became Secty at 40 ; current HUD Secty Julien Castro another Mayor of San Antonio was 40 when appointed) or a former Congressman who has knowledge of the area (Jack Kemp in Bush the elder) even GW Bush found Republicans with public sector and/or housing experience.
While most high level administrators of affordable housing programs are Democrats; there must be some competent Republicans in red states at the head of the state Housing Finance Agency or state Department of Housing and Community Development. In addition there are plenty of developers/attorneys/bankers involved in the field are Republican (although more from the rapidly fading moderate wing).

Yeesh. But having watched the hearing, he spent a lot of time talking about lead and other healthy housing issues. Committee Ds seemed satisfied that he’s serious about it.
On fair housing regs… and on this Trump & HUD money issue… not so good.
