Discussion: Can This GOP Lawsuit Derail Obama's Immigration Relief?

Discussion for article #231025

The lawsuit is led by Texas Attorney General (and Gov.-elect) Greg Abbottā€¦

Iā€™m beginning to think it may have been best that Wendy Davis was not elected as our Governor.
From the track record given our last 3 elected chief executives here in Texas?
She would have immediately transformed into an incurious and vindictive man.

Not yet sworn in-- Abbott is ahead of schedule.

I find it amazing and deeply troubling that Republicans are resorting to threats and lawsuits instead of passing legislation. They may not like the Presidentā€™s action but they have the power of passing laws. But they seem to be impotent. So now itā€™s in the hands of the overly politicized legal system. I feel sorry for America.

So, 100 immigration legal scholars, including conservatives, agree the suit against the Adminstration is weak. But, here we go. Sadly, the backwards state I live in has joined in the suit. No surprise there. Govenor Haley has bigger aspirations and hopes to be on the national scene soon.

I do hope Latinos remember exactly which party wanted to break up families, and it certainly isnā€™t the party that claims to be about family values.

Youā€™re forgetting the current crop of cowardly worthless dem politicians who wouldnā€™t even be bothered
to stand up for Obama. So how are we going to get some magical, forthright politicians who will even
own up to being democrats? The republicans lie, cheat and steal as a matter of course. Along with
a media that is complicit with their treachery, all I can say is: good luck.

And the outreach continues.

So essentially, the Republicans would rather clog up the courts with lawsuits instead of passing legislation to fix the current system.
Perhaps Jorge Ramos can start asking why that is.

Hereā€™s one main thing on immigration for me and I am what some would describe as a liberal democrat or progressive.

Like the world, the US already has an over population crisis. We know that the planet is already over populated with humans and we also know that the US is part of that problem. This problem does not belong to others - it belongs to us as a nation as well.

Right now we have a population of around 318 Million people. A broad group of scientists have studied and determined that the US land mass can sustain between 150 million and 175 million people. In other words we are already over populated IF we think about sustainability and if we seriously think about climate change.

As usual, Obama isnā€™t exactly leading and isnā€™t listening to experts - he is a typical politician and heā€™s going where he thinks the votes reside for him and for the Democratic Party. If this issue wasnā€™t so important for votes, then heā€™d be going where the money isā€¦not any different than Republicans.

What I would hope is the progressive community would force our government and our leaders to address the whole immigration area within the context of this country facing our own over population crisis.

Immigration has been one of the areas that has contributed to our nationā€™s population expansion during the baby boomer generation. Note: The US population has DOUBLED just during the baby boomer generation! That is not sustainable and immigration has to become part of a plan to curtail population growth in the US and to even plan to gradual reduce our population back to sustainable levels.

Our nationā€™s over population crisis is REAL - as a nation, we are no longer able to feed our own population. The US is a large net importer of food now - we no longer grow what we consume! Part of this is due to really bad trade treaties such as NAFTA and it will get worse under Obamaā€™s planned CAFTA treaty which is actually worse than NAFTA. But our food import/export balance is alos mainly due to our over population.

Do we really want the following:

  • More traffic jams in all of our major cities?
  • More air pollution
  • More water pollution
  • More congested areas
  • More threatened, endangered, and extinct species
  • Energy shortages
  • Water shortages in several major cities and states
  • Etc.

The US is no longer an baron and wide open land mass in need of human resources. We already have too many humans!

I knew it was a Sahill Kaur story before I looked - aure enough - yes they could do it and maybe they will but what chance do they have of succeeding. I suspect we will see more of these things going forward. I think it is going to be fun watching Obama beat them back and expose them for what they are, They have no desire to do the peopleā€™s business - just try to undo all the good that has been done. After two years of more republican bullshit, we will be ready to kick their asses out in 2016.

Iā€™m sure that theyā€™ve found a Federalist Society Stooge siting on the bench who will throw out Obamaā€™s Order. And there are five rubber stamps on the Supreme Court that will uphold them overturning Obamaā€™s order.

A corrupt judiciary is an early symptom of fascism. if symptoms persist it can become a chronic condition.

Germany has about 10 times as many people per square mile than the United States has. China is slightly smaller than the United States and has 1.3 billion people. One of the first observations which strikes any visitor to the United States is the enormous mass of land which is basically without inhabitants. The narrative of severe overpopulation of the United States is not supported by any reasonable comparison to other countries.

If the ā€œarticleā€ is posed as a question about some thing republicans may doā€¦its a Sahil article.

It amazes me that a man can get and keep a job as a reporter when all he writes is fiction and conjecture.

President Obama already deports as many illegal immigrants as he possibly can with the budget Congress has passed. The compromise executive action should be for INS to focus its enforcement actions on American corporations that pay any worker less than $15 per hour. INS should coordinate with OSHA too, since the work stoppage would be the perfect time to measure desk heights and make sure the material safety data sheets are current.

Not based on content or even fact.
But on click-throughs.

One takeaway I got from the Nate Silver/ESPN story yesterday was a ā€˜read between the linesā€™ comment that had nothing to do with the quality of 538.comā€™s content-- but that ESPN was disappointed in ā€˜the web trafficā€™.

The clicks.

How often do we say that and yet here we are with the rep controlling the Senate and the House. It is time for the Democrats and independents to take notice and effectively do something other than fill email boxes with requests for money and signing petitions.

Could we see something other than your assertion regarding the 150 scientists who claim America can only sustain 175 million people?
