Yes, but even if Bill Maher can’t effectively swing one single congressional district, at least Bill Maher will raise awareness about the very important issue of Bill Maher.
LOL…I went to the Twin Cities on a business trip way back when Fargo was just released. I was blown away as soon as I got into the terminal…that everyone WAS actually talking like that!
Not only did Obama eke out a win there in 2012, but several legislative seats flipped. Republicans probably have the enthusiasm advantage nationally, but not in Minnesota. We outdrew them in the precinct caucuses even though they had all the contests. We had higher turnout in the primary even though they had contests for everything and we had just auditor contented. Democrats have the better groundgame, and Obermueller is on his second try. Candidates often lose the first time out, and in fact Kline won only on his third try. Yes, unless polling or election night says otherwise, this looks like a winnable district.
And kudos to Maher for picking on the viewer response and not just going for a crazy guy in a safe district. Kline is an ideologue, not crazy, and this is no safe district.
Why does Bill Maher think he’s got that kind of juice? How many viewer does he pull?
We don’t ALL talk like that!! … But a lot of us do …
Here’s a few standards:
Well, OK then.
Oh Gees (geez with heavy emphasis on the ‘s’ )
Oh fer GOD’s sake!
Oh fer CRIPES sakes! (Notice the change of sake from singluar to plural when it goes from GOD’s to CRIPES? Yah!)
Um, yeah. I think that’s called “politics.”
Leave it to Sahil to reference right-wing Politico’s Larry Sabato ®. Sabato is also the one who calls the Virginia senatorial race as “Likely Democrat” while calling closer races in other states “Safe Republican”.
" . . . Is liberal comedian Bill Maher . . ."
wrong!!
Bill Maher is a professed libertarian.
I thought Maher was going to go after Blake Farenthold 451.
I don’t think it’s just poor planning that had him pick a relatively non-competitive race to go for. If it was one where the Dem might have won anyway, but lost, they can’t say afterward that being associated with Maher (as Kline is already doing) was a drag on the Dem’s numbers. OTOH, if he can manage to boost the numbers above what is expected, he can reasonably claim it was mostly due to him, since there’s little effort from the DCCC.
I think the term “carpetbagger” will forever hold water as a powerful epithet in US politics
Hey, I’ll send some turkee to help send that dirt bag packing. I imagine people have never looked closely at Kline’s actual voting record.
He’s not going to swoop in and do a comedy routine, he’s going to put actual money into the race.
Big difference.
See the story above: “…the district became less Republican after redistricting following the 2010 election, losing conservative Carver County and picking up southern portions of the Twin Cities metro area. The Cook Political Report’s partisan voter index rates it a R+2, a slight GOP edge. Obama squeaked out a victory there in 2012 by 0.1 percentage points…”
Maher and I saw something you didn’t: This district is no longer Safe Republican, it is most definitely in play and getting more (D) by the day…
And because we are now in the last 50 days before Election Day, the GOP may not be able to mobilize in time to help here.
“Comedian” I guess we have to give him, but since when is Maher a liberal? I don’t think he’d describe himself that way, or at least not without a dozen caveats. E.g., calling himself a “9/11 liberal” to explain the Islamophobic orientation of his anti-religion commentary.
The fact that most people can find about 40% of their beliefs reflected in something Maher has said at some point is why he’s successful in his job, which is (and I say this with some respect) to be a shit-stirrer. But even if–especially if–we assume he actually means everything he says, he’s no liberal, even by the most liberal definition of liberal.
That’s who I voted for… the lil fat ass deserved it more…
Yeah, Maher wasted his money on this one. Oh well.
it’s time to just call it as it is: Bill Maher is the left’s Glenn Beck
I hope and pray that you are correct.
I used to live in that district and I can tell you it’s very red. Southern 'burbs of Minneapolis/St. Paul, including rural areas always elect him by a wide margin. His website used to feature a pic of him in his Marine uniform shaking hands with Ronnie Raygun, and it was seriously enough to make me gag. He’s as nutty as Bachmann up in the northern suburbs and I’d love to see him lose, but I have to believe anyone with an R after their name will always win in that effed up redneck district.
