I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is actually a commonplace practice in schools around the country that feed children in school lunchrooms who have reduced or free lunch, and whose accounts haven’t been paid up. It even happens with children who have had their accounts paid up, but not updated properly by school officials. I know. It happened many times to my own child in school on several occasions when he was younger…and the embarrassment a child feels is a horrible experience that stays with many children growing up, especially when they feel their peers know about it. I remember personally running to my son’s school several times with a bagged lunch from my job, though it was not much consolation to my son, I can assure you as the embarrassment and damage had been done.

It goes without saying, this woman should never have lost her job, regardless of whether it was the Xmas season or not. Its cruel. The punishment does not fit the NON-crime. Many may only notice the heartlessness because of the season. Hungry children in American public schools has sadly been a tradition of monumental proportions at all times of the school year. And don’t get me started on in-classroom pizza day where extra money is expected no matter how cash strapped you are or have become…NO PIZZA FOR YOU TODAY LITTLE TOMMY…YOU’RE MOMMA DIDN’T PAY US. HERE’S SOME CRAYONS. GO COLOR IN THE CORNER.
Yeah. This article is infuriating. I wish schools wouldn’t take out their hostility on the good hearts that want to provide for our children or parents like myself (in times past), who didn’t always have my son’s lunch account up to snuff because of the mistakes I made.

these stories drive me nuts with the cruelty inherent in them… and the fucking humiliation for the child, because there’s always this little tidbit in them:
Bowden said if a child is over the credit limit, workers are supposed to take their tray away and dump it.

My mother worked for a while in the NYC public schools as a lunch lady. Not something to be proud of, but it paid the bills. She often would put extra food on the plate of the children she thought were hungry. Luckily, we have people like that who ignore the rules and just do what is right.

This makes no sense as almost all urban, most suburban and a lot of rural schools have a certain percentage of students who qualify for reduced or no cost lunch (and sometime breakfast). nice school administrators. Nice district if they back the school on this.

In Chicago, all the school lunches are free. But if you just want a milk, you have to get an entire lunch and throw it away, because the contract with the Feds is reimbursement is for whole lunches only.
So they throw away a lot of food in chicago.
