Discussion: Brother Of American Detained In Russia Wonders If He's Political Pawn

If this is a screen shot from VKontakte, the Russian version of Facebook is any indication, yes. Yes he is.

This guy strikes me as too sketchy to be a real spy, but given what I’ve read and heard about him, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if it turns out he’s either (1) a nut job who thinks he’s a spy or (2) a fraudster who goes around trying to convince people he’s a spy. Either way, he would have showed up on the Ruskie’s radar and they would naturally want to take a very close look at him to be sure of what’s what. Then, even if they concluded he was basically harmless, they would still be able to use him for their own political purposes.

Awaiting instructions from Vladimir Putin and chewing benzos to control the anxiety he is experiencing over Putin’s threats to reveal everything the Russians learned when they hacked the RNC back in 2016.

One way or another he is. But for one side or both?

The criminal stooge is a Trump-Putin prop.

A pawn, or a fully-aware participant?

I’m leaning toward the latter. Given all we know about the guy, the former is just a little too convenient. A patsy, a fall-guy, an innocent victim of a larger geo-political game?

Nah…

The hypothesis that ā€œhe’s been inserted there intentionally to create an asset for trade against Butinaā€ is not only believable but highly likely. Considering who all the players are, it’s an easy conclusion to reach.

The tell already happened. It didn’t even take 3 days. HIs ā€œlawyerā€ in Russia already suggested he could be traded.

The thing about trading spycraft assets though, is the valuation. A ā€œregular citizenā€ arrested for ā€œspyingā€ will get support from our diplomatic corps, and not much esle.

You don’t hear about those people getting traded for actual known or exposed assets because it almost never happens.

If a trade actually does come to the table, it will mean he’s either a) actually a ā€˜spy’ with real value to our intel community, or b) has been planted there to provide leverage for a trade.

It won’t ever be c) because ā€œan innocent US citizen got unfairly arrested and so we’ll trade a spy to release themā€ā€¦

Because if we did that, it would lead to much more of the same… innocent civilians being arrested and used to get actual spies released.

So what do you think? Is he a spy or a plant? I doubt seriously that he’s ā€œnone of the aboveā€ā€¦

That’s funny. Because I’ve been wondering if he’s half-addled dupe/agent like Page.

You have to wonder how many people read that headline and had the same thought:
ā€œya think?ā€ (Although if the reader is an actual Trumper, we know that the answer is ā€œno, I don’t.ā€)

How does one get all those citizenships?

I don’t know about this guy but my kids have three passports each and all legit.

I was born to an American father and Australian mother and grew up in both countries. Having registered my birth with both countries, that’s two passports for me. My wife is Canadian, and the kids were born in Canada, so after a fair amount of paperwork, the kids ended up with all three.

My grandfather on my mum’s side was Scottish, so my siblings and I could have apparently also gone for a British passport (and all that implied about Euro-mobility until recently) but only my sister pursued that. Still, if you’re careful about documenting things from the start it’s actually not unheard of…

Watching that particular little weasel get what’s coming to him will be a source of personal joy.

I know he was late to this party, but wouldn’t it be cool if Ollie North gets swept up in this mess and finally does some time?

A guy can dream, can’t he?

This Whelen fellow doesn’t seem to have the legit reasons that your family does. Mostly since Whelen doesn’t appear to be married or have any other familial reasons to have them. I get the the Canadian and British ones, those countries have plenty of Russian spies, it’s the Ireland one that I find to be the sort of misfit here.

He probably got frustrated when he couldn’t find the flag he was looking for.

Paul Whelan is part of a scheme cooked up by Putin & Trump to trade him for Maria Butina before too many secrets are known of Butina’s assignment between Russia and the Trump campaign. Trump knows that if he just freed her he wouldn’t be able to justify her release. But this is just another phony stunt being played on the American people.

I haven’t lived there since the mid-80s, but at that time I was told an Irish passport was an Open Sesame in much of the world.
FWIW.
