The broad American consensus of opinion, is ideologically conservative and operationally liberal. I keep coming back to this because it helps explain so many things.
30 years worth of deliberate, conservative, policy choices have given every advantage to organized capital. It’s harder and harder each year for people to sell their labor. More and more people have to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, often to 2 or 3 different jobs. Many employers won’t give more than a couple weeks’ notice when they’re buying. Fewer and fewer couples can make rent without both spouses selling their labor.
As a Cub Scout Bear Leader (third grade,) I already have girls in my den: their little sisters. I’m all in favor of a unified, co-ed scouting program, but the biggest problem is lack of adult volunteers. Parents’ unavailability to attend meetings or even RSVP, is a close second. One feeds into the other: we leaders get discouraged when we give a couple hours planning an activity and no one shows up, and people get discouraged from showing up if it isn’t super-entertaining. This is how organizations die.
