Discussion: Boston Globe Calls For Reinstating Assault Weapons Ban After Orlando

Pointing out that there have been 47 mass shootings since the assault weapons ban expired, resulting in 411 deaths, the Globe editors argued ***a “sensible, mature society” should be able to recognize that these firearms play a central role i***n our national gun death epidemic.

Well, there you go, the thrust of their argument undermined by their very own observations.

Nonsense. Your argument appears to be if gun deaths are the product of so many things we should not do one thing that will reduce gun deaths. If your argument is that we should do everything in addition to banning the AR-15 (for civilians) to reduce gun deaths than I agree.

The best way to get the scientific research we need to find solutions that reduce the carnage is for Congress to establish a national gun safety agency along the lines of the national highway agency that researched vehicular carnage and helped reduce auto deaths by over 40% since 1970 even though Americans drive three times as many miles now as then.

Until we break the power of the NRA over Congress, nothing will change.

I once asked an NRA member if they sold a special cleaner that got all the blood off their hands and left them shiny smooth. His face got beet red and he called me a commie while trying to punch me out.

“The idea of restricting unfettered access to assault weapons is only considered radical when it comes out of the mouth of a modern US president,” the editors concluded in their op-ed. “To most Americans, and every other democracy on the planet, it is rightly considered common sense.”

Even the gun nuts understand it is common sense. That is why they run out and buy these guns after mass murders. They know a sensible response is to ban these weapons.

If that was to Stevie, I think he was ripping on the presumption that we’re at all a ‘sensible, mature society’.

“Their motives are many, but their opportunity is limited only by their gun and ammunition magazine brand preference.”

Frankly, this is just patently ridiculous. Magazine brands are ubiquitous. Preference there doesn’t limit people at all.

I think he is responding to Stevie’s comments from another thread:

I used to step on a rake once in awhile, then I had my eyeglass prescription adjusted. My dentist lost his boat in the deal, but he never asked me out to fish anyway.

Massachusetts has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. Including an assault weapons ban.

And guess what? It also has the second-lowest number of gun-related deaths in the country.

Something tells me it’s not just coincidence.
