Discussion: Bodies Of 7 Women Found In Indiana After Confession

Discussion for article #229027

If your kids ever complain about bad wording in one of their story problems…point them to the second paragraph.

THERE’S a way to try to bury actual facts in a pile of words and numbers.

Writing quality typical of AP. For sure.

But wow, imagine if this animal had shot his victims with a g-u-n rather than murdering them with his hands? TPM would be on fire.

He strangled them? This is America. We use guns to kill people here, as God intended when He wrote the Second Amendment. What is this country coming to?

If he’d been using a gun he could have quadrupled his kill count without breaking a sweat.

Yeah, they really underplay the strangling by serial killers, which is much bigger problem than the thousands killed by guns every year in the US.

Of course it is. You know how much money the gun lobby makes every time someone is strangled? NOTHING.

Do you want to keep living in that America? Because I DON’T!!!

And you’d be defending the gun. Same deaths, different MO but precious guns involved. What would be the difference?

There were several different body totals in this article but not 7 “after” the confession.

As dramatic as that hypothetical offering might be, let’s get real here…

How many SERIAL killers have used a firearm to perpetrate their heinous crimes?

I’ll give you a hint… it’s not many. And for good reason.

Better question… How many of the thousands of serial killer victims could have saved themselves and the other future victims by being legally armed?

I’ll give you all some time to noodle that one through. No name calling please. And please don’t bring up Bush, NRA or any other boogey men you have at the ready…

OK, I’m puzzled as to why this article has been posted here. I’m not complaining, mind you, I’m just trying to figure out why this particular murder story and not any of the thousands of others that appear all over the country every day (for example, the news that a body has been discovered in Albemarle County, Virginia, that police think is probably that of of Hannah Graham, the UVa student who disappeared from downtown Charlottesville on September 13, a death the authorities think might be linked to that of a VaTech student abducted from a concert at UVa five years ago, and to another woman who was sexually assaulted in Fairfax in 2005).

I just don’t see where this particular story fits into the any of the areas that TPM normally covers.

Well, since every day I go around unarmed and have yet to be strangled by a serial killer I don’t think I see your point.

But let’s say it was 10,000 people who would have been saved from a serial killer if they were packing and the serial killer was stupid. That’s, what, two months of “accidental” firearms deaths?

Those deaths, BTW, are factual, not mastubatory gun fetishist numbers like your “thousands”.

Because TPM pays to be on the AP wire and it was a very simple cut and paste job to fill space?

That may well be the only explanation.

I’ll wait for you to document “thousands of serial killer victims” first.

We talking since the beginning of time? A worldwide database of serial killers since 1900 came up with a total of 11,187 victims.

Over 113 years, although it cautions that victims of serial killers in the last few years may not be identified as such, if the crimes are still unsolved. That’s still less than 100 per year on average.

And though the typical serial killer does appear to enjoy the killing, a person is still almost twice as likely to be shot by one as strangled.

Probably accounts for the low popularity of the Hand Control Lobby…

Ah, but America has guns all over the place! And those guns are why there are so many more serial killers everywhere else and almost none in the USA!

Right? Right?

When will this savagery in Republican states ever end?

I have noticed that most of the writers at TPM appear to have learned English as a second language – and somebody should fire their ASL teacher for massive incompetence.

Every day you go around unarmed and (probably) haven’t been shot by a lunatic intent on a mass shooting, either. So what exactly is your point?

And please read what I wrote. Carefully. Word by word. No claim was made that “thousands” of victims could have been saved. I asked how many of the thousands of serial killer victims could have saved themselves. RIF

And yeah, your numbers of accidental shooting deaths are pure and utter BS. 60,000 per annum. C’mon. Be serious.
