Discussion: Black Students On Daily Campus Microaggressions: 'It's Exhausting'

That’s not the point at all. It’s about trying to give certain people a false sense of control and power via bitchin’ and moanin’.

There is a difference between coke and pepsi, too. Big deal.

Judging the general tenor of online comments at TPM and other sites I visit, such “micro-aggression” is the popular default response. Since fault-accusing anger at others comes immediately after denial of the problem becomes unsustainable in the Kuebler-Ross grieving process, I reckon that “this line of thinking” is integral to human social adaptation, not just the response of “some/those people”.

Get real. People are treated bad the world over. It gets thrown in your face. If you think you have discovered some big secret with “microaggressions” you are deluding yourself.

“can cause some students to leave school.”

Feature, not a bug.

Then presumably that student would have changed his seat before the black student sat down. It was the same “view” after all.

Fess didn’t write about any “black student”. Care to rearrange your comment?

I see you didn’t bother to comment on the rest of what I posted. You are right that people get screwed sometimes just because the person doing the screwing CAN, but that also doesn’t negate that sometimes people of color get screwed because of their color, and nothing else.

The important thing, I think, to recognize is that there are two things at play here: (a) objectively demonstrable, actual “microagressions” motivated by conscious or subconscious racism AND (b) a conditioned response to perceive things as racist microagressions that might not be, due to the ubiquitous presence of both real microagressions and real, overt, demonstrable acts of actual racism. The question is where the balance should be understood to fall. Not every perceived insult or slight is based on racism, and not every well-meaning but ignorant or naive act or statement is excused.

Why should anyone bother to comment on the all-too-obvious “sometimes” fish?

Great summary!

Because YOU assert that microaggressions are bullshit- full stop. There’s plenty of situations where people are just jerks- it’s who they are. There are situations where people are having a bad day. There are situations where people are racists and cowards. There are situations where people say and do dumb shit that we call microaggressions.

As a liberal 70+ year old white woman living in a red state I can tell you numerous times I observed so called microaggressions toward Blacks, women…
On the job alongside minorities
Waiting at an airport counter
Stopped in a white cadillac at night
My daughter stopped in the same white cadillac for “no reason” when she was pushed white officer for why she was stopped, “just forget about it”
Worst of all, the racist comments at my book club where I am ridiculed as a liberal who doesn’t consent to sweet little nice books.
Stay tuned, our next read is"Between the World and Me" Coats, the contemporary well respected and well reviewed Black author. I even expect some to boycott the meeting but I will keep pushing with books of substance.

No one but the addled uses the term “microagressions” in a non-perjorative way, sometimes.

I’ve been on that tram lots of times. People don’t all squish to one side to “get a better view,” particularly on hot days. This is the new tram that runs on the road. We were on the old one that ran on rails, but same idea. I think the old one was wider.

Can I ask you, nicely, when did you start using the term “microaggressions”?

I feel sorry for your mother…

Thanks for the info. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but I know what you are saying. You can see it on almost any city bus that has a “homeless-looking” person on it.

Have you ever taken your kid to Legoland? You must have. We went last year and my kids loved it.

She’s dead. Nothing for you to concern yourself with.

You know your comment is a microagression. As are all of @seedeevee’s. Which is making me feel uncomfortable and slightly threatened. I wish TPM would’ve issued a trigger warning for this thread.
