Discussion: Biden Takes Heat For Using 'Shylock' Slur In Speech

HEADLINE

Whit says Mr X breaks into peoples houses and accosts young children in the shopping malls!!

Biden occasionally SAYS stupid things.
Bush constantly DID stupid things.
Which one gets/got more airtime?
I thought so.

I agree. I just found out that saying “let’s go Dutch” where both parties pay their own way was offensive to someone I know of Dutch heritage. I didn’t know that. I’ve since learned better myself. BTW, the person explained to me that Dutch people also have their own sensitivities about being considered “cheap” and not wanting to pay for others. And the term sort of indicates that without saying it.

Flagged, asshole.

The ADL did back in May. It only took five seconds to find that via a google.

It’s astounding how these professional groups are quick to take offense and criticize a Democrat like Biden who spoke inartfully, perhaps, but clearly not maliciously, but they give free passes on a regular basis to the right-wink nuts who are quick to trivialize the Holocaust by comparing Obamacare to it.

What color is the sky in your world? I’m guessing a delightful teal.

Its parlance today extrapolated to all Jews is a slur.
What if it’s extrapolated not to Jews but to bankers?

It’s strange to encounter a mind who still thinks Benghazi will hurt Clinton.

Biden should have characterized these low-lifes as Ferengi. Its *almost *the modern day version of Shylock with “Rules of Acquisition”, but without all the ethnic and cultural baggage.

The Benghazi blather only stiffens the weiners of far rightwing morans. Everyone else, not so much.

saying “I’m using this historic slur in a different way” doesn’t change the fact that it’s still a historic slur

history matters

I wouldn’t be surprised if every culture has their derogatory term for a “cheater” or “cheapskate” that traces back to some reviled group struggling with the dominant culture of its time. “Indian-giver” comes to mind.

For all we know, the word “cheapskate” probably has its etymology in some Norwegian’s hatred for Swedes who were caught gliding across borders on actual skates.

Or, maybe its more like this:

The phrase, 'No good deed goes unpunished", applies here in a situation akin to student eagerness to utilized recently acquired knowledge to attempt a correction of the person who taught that knowledge or a borrower of money giving the lender investment tips and leading to another classic, “Familiarity breeds contempt.”

You said it better than I could have. I thought the comment sounded a lot like flaming, so I instantly let it go.

“The character, a predatory and calculating Jewish lender, provided the basis for anti-Semetic stereotypes in the Western world.” (Emphasis added.) Wow. I’m ashamed for this writer and for TPM.

No, that’s defaming to the Gypsies.

No. Welching defames the Welsh and gyped defames the Gypsies.

Thanks, Eustace – that was indeed a significant omission. I was thinking as I read the article that I was sure Biden would issue an abject apology.

“Shyster” simply means a bull shitter, a trait that knows no ethnicity.
