Discussion for article #224000
I’ll bet Angela Merkel had a few words for her German team in the locker room after the game too She’s a real football fan and turns up at matches whenever she can.
Still, it’s good to see Joe showing an interest.and it’s almost amazing to contemplate a vice-president of the US with a granddaughter who is an aspiring goalie. Soccer in the US has come a long way since the World Cup was held in Mexico in 1986 and the only way to watch the games was to have access to a Spanish language station (the US didn’t qualify, which in those days was more the rule than the exception)
And ‘Der Mannschaft’’ demolished Portugal (and left Rinaldo pouting like a little boy)… puts US in good position if they can pick up another couple points. But Teutonic glory shall prevail!
Great to see Biden there as well. Want the US team to do well and soccer/fußball in US has come a long way. Am also from Seattle where the Sounders FC draw as many fans (45k) to each match, which is also more than many European clubs…
I am living here in Bavaria and you should have heard the hooting and hollering in the apartment complex with the demolition of Portugal.
We’ll see what Klinsmann can do with the US. A couple of points and they could be in knockout round.
Kansas City, my home town, is a hotbed of soccer. Sporting KC has two guys on the team. Graham Zusi, one of our players, got an assist on the corner kick that Brooks put in the back of the net. It has been overlooked by many folks but Zusi’s corner was a thing of beauty.
Yes, a beautiful service, right on the edge of the 6-yard box, not too high and not too low. A perfect placement for the header in.
I was surprised the US managed a second goal.
With Altidore down/out, Dempsey bloodied (and no Donovan), it was left to CB sub-John Brooks to deliver.
The 21-yr-old Brooks is the first US substitute ever-- to score in a World Cup match.
I’m not sure the US can hold Portugal in check the way Germany did. They’ve got a ton of players with long resumes.
Ronaldo and Nani’s pace on the wings is my main concern.
But hey! We got 3 pts vs Ghana!
That’s how it had to start to be successful.

Yes, but Germany did the US a great favor by putting Portugal 4 goals down. It depends on whether the US faces a weakened and demoralized Portugal or a really pissed-off Portugal next Sunday. If the US can manage even a draw against Portugal they’ll go through (unless Portugal beats Ghana by 6 goals). I don’t see either Ghana or the US beating Germany.
Klinnsman made the perfect choice for replacing the cramping Bedoya.
Having watched Zusi in the friendlies-- I was pleased when he came on the field.
Our set pieces had no flare to that point.

Holy Crap! Does Uncle Joe Biden give out VEEP drink tokens?
I want one. Milwaukee’s Best, baby!
the best beer in Milwaukee is Cap city from Madison
I was always partial to Leinenkugel’s myself, but they\re not really from Milwaukee. Not all that far away though. Still in the best tradition of Wisconsin breweries.
You go Joe!
Agree on it all…
Will watch the US game soon. Taped it as it was at midnight time. Saw some highlights but want to see the match in detail.
First, what’s Joe doing with his shirt on in this picture? Second, I say bring in Joe for the pre-game pep talk. My guess is that Joe, with heavy reliance on some colorful language, would get Team USA thoroughly amped up.
