Cue all of the conservative snowflake takes about how this is a thuggish assault on a white lady’s freedom of speech.
Hey, its still a free country the last time I checked. Like it or not, its their graduation, and my guess is no one asked them if it was OK if she gave the commencement address. The administration there were tone-deaf. They might wanna first check with the student body the next time, or at least take a poll to see if someone like DeVos would be acceptable, speaking to their aspirations for their future. I would think not…since the witch is a complete bigot…a quiet northern bigot, but a bigot nonetheless. Segregated schools of course don’t bother her a bit, but civil rights for all aren’t exactly at the top of her list, either.

As the crowd kept trying to shout her down, university president Edison Jackson briefly took over the microphone to lecture the students before she continued.
“If this behavior continues, your degrees will be mailed to you. Choose which way you want to go,” Jackson warned.
I wish the students would’ve walked out en masse as soon as he said that. I would have. The cost of mailing that many diplomas wouldn’t come cheap.
Yes. And what’s the threat exactly, comparing receiving a mailed diploma vs. letting DeVos spew her bullshit? On the one hand you have a wasteful and pointless spectacle intended to demean and punish students, and on the other hand the university would need to mail out some diplomas.
I’m glad they kept booing even after the university president threatened them. He forgets who pays him.
That’s probably about the best it will get today. Not much hope of anything going up against the democracy-crushing shenanigans employed by this White House, or his strange attraction to authoritarianism in all its forms. He sure was pleased with himself with those Soviet-inspired TASS news agency photo-ops today. This is all just so surreal. And he left the American press out. WOWeee, unbelievable…Has this maniac finally jumped the shark enough for some of these GOP bozos and holdouts to get angry like the rest of us?
I gotta get out my mom’s old borscht recipe if this keeps up. I hate the stuff but it might work as an acceptable bribe should tRump turn over the keys of the kingdom, Fort Knox, and the nuclear launch codes to his Russian benefactors (as payment for services rendered). Its bad enough they and their fellow travelers already have the “fake news” or propaganda market cornered here in the US and on the internet. The Russian mob is no doubt grinning from ear to ear. Just look at Lavrov and Kislyak in those photos. Someone’s happy…and it isn’t me. I’m still shocked from last night…but I expect him to try to top that before the week is out. He’s that unhinged.
Actually, at many universities, students receive empty boxes and their diplomas are mailed to them (especially if the time between the issuing of grades for that final semester and graduation is tight). That was kind of an empty threat by Jackson.
It’s probably the most edifying story we’ll hear for weeks. I believe in the right to protest and I am especially gratified when young people care enough to speak up.
Better booed than shooed. Bush, for such an unartful politician actually became quite agile on demand as the shoes neared his face.
agreed. When I saw the video clip of the students turning their backs to her, I got pretty emotional. What a statement.

I’m glad they protested so vocally and strongly. Sure, the university has the right to invite her… but they’re idiots for doing so. And the idea that sucking up to someone like her, or any of the current administration goons, is in their interest is completely misguided and living in a dream world. She’s going to screw these colleges over one way or another… and all of the families in the country who rely on decent public school education being available, in order to make it to college at all. So why enable her by giving her cover to make her look like she’s not the snake that she is? She’s completely untrustworthy, so anyone thinking they’re going to get her on their side is ridiculous.
But it is heartening to see that the students can smell that bullshit a lot more easily than the University admins. Good for them.
