WSJ has a piece up handicapping various contenders. Surprisingly, his daughter Meghan not among them.

“State law requires the governor to name an appointee of the same political party who will serve until the next general election in 2020.”

What does state law say about a case like this, where that party no longer exists?

Now one more vote for Kavanaugh. I was listening to Slate’s political gabfest yesterday and John Dickerson reminded everyone of how Ted Kennedy BLASTED Bork’s nomination immediately - and painted a very detailed and dire picture of what America would look with him on the court as the swing vote, like Kavanaugh would be. Where is any Democrat doing that? Any of the 25 who want to run in 2020? Maybe someone has done this and it’s been missed in the onslaught of moron news …

It sure would be a good way to pick up the liberal gauntlet.

McCain refused to let voters decide his successor till November 2020.

The GOP Governor of Arizona will pick his successor since McCain did not resign earlier.

This action by McCain seems to create another vote for packing the Supreme Court with another right-wing fascist.

Ducey wants to wait until the results of the primary are in.

McSally will probably win. Let’s hope he appoints Ward or Arpaio, giving Dems an easy win in 2020. (He won’t, but it’s something to dream about…)

And if he had resigned, who do you think would have been elected in his place? A Democrat? Not likely. It is AZ, after all.

He’s decided already …

But he’s afraid John’s gonna pop up and punch him in the nose for it —

6 ft. may still not be enough ----

All of the potential replacements I’ve seen mentioned will be worse than McCain. Some of them much worse! Huffpost mentioned Schweikert, Gosar, Biggs and Shadegg… ugh. I love Arizona’s nature but not the right wing politicians.

My worry is that Douchey will figure Mustang McSally will lose in the general and appoint her to McCain’s seat, since it looks like Sinema is going to clean the clocks of whoever the Republicans throw up.

Agreed. Democrats have been far too timid about taking on Kavanaugh, whose record as a extremist political hack is sufficiently known and whose nomination by a would-be dictator speaks for itself. The timidity in the name of collegiality or institutional decorum is downright unacceptable when you consider the theft of Garland’s seat and the shocking but predictable refusal to open Kavanaugh’s record for inspection. Democrats should be saying loud and clear that the Republicans are forcing a Trumpist extremist onto the Court; that the nomination is illegitimate; that the corrupt GOP has utterly broken the confirmation system; and that a Justice Kavanaugh would be illegitimate. They should clearly state that the GOP has turned the Court into an arm of its party and that Americans will not and should not accept the legitimacy of decisions made thanks to votes from Gorsuch and Kavanaugh.

The process is a sham. Someone should have the guts to point it out.

I don’t understand why people like Chris Murphy or Sherrod Brown aren’t speaking up. They’re both probably up for reelection, which would explain it, of course. Schumer is not, however, and he could. Certainly others come to mind. (Let’s not think about Al Franken because then I’m ready to just go back to bed and get under the covers all day.) Arrggggh. It’s too exasperating for words. I just hope they find the fortitude when the time comes to advance two additional SC nominees to compensate for the ones appointed by the criminal in office. Not holding my breath.
